Acoustic treatment panels are absorptive surfaces, typically foam or fabric-wrapped fiberglass, mounted on walls and ceilings to reduce the reflections and reverberation that build up in a recording or mixing room. Unlike bass traps, which target deep low-end buildup in corners, these panels mainly work on the mid and high frequencies where flutter echo and general room “liveliness” cause problems for both tracking and mixing decisions.

Untreated rooms color recordings with early reflections and make mix decisions unreliable, since what you hear from the monitors is a blend of direct sound and reflected sound rather than the mix itself. Panels placed at key reflection points, particularly beside and behind the listening position and around a vocal booth, cut down on that added color so both recordings and mix judgments are more trustworthy across different rooms and playback systems.

  • Absorption coefficient across the frequency range you care about, not just thickness
  • Mounting method suited to your walls, especially in rented spaces
  • Coverage area versus over-treating a room into an unnaturally dead sound
  • Fire rating for panels near lighting or in smaller enclosed rooms
