Detection works best on music with a clear beat and tonal content. Tempo can be ambiguous by an octave (70 vs 140 BPM) and key by its relative major/minor, so use these as a strong starting point and trust your ear. The Camelot code makes it easy to find harmonically-compatible tracks for DJ mixing — see the Camelot Wheel. To tap the tempo by hand, use Tap Tempo.

How to find the BPM and key of a song

  1. Upload your track — MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC. It is analysed on your device.
  2. Read the results — the BPM, key and Camelot code appear automatically.
  3. Use them to sync effects to the tempo, transpose to the key, or find compatible tracks to mix.

BPM, key and Camelot — what they’re for

  • BPM (tempo) — set delays, tremolo and sidechain timing, or match tracks for a mix.
  • Key — transpose samples, pick a vocal range, or choose a compatible melody.
  • Camelot code — DJs use it to find harmonically-compatible songs fast; neighbouring numbers on the Camelot Wheel mix cleanly.

How accurate is it?

Detection works best on music with a clear beat and tonal content. Two things are naturally ambiguous: tempo can be out by an octave (70 vs 140 BPM) and key can be confused with its relative major/minor (C major vs A minor). Treat the result as a strong starting point and confirm with your ear. To count the tempo by hand, use the Tap Tempo tool.

All analysis happens locally with the Web Audio API — your file never leaves your browser, there’s no signup, and there are no limits. Once you know the key, transpose the track with the Pitch Shifter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this as a song key detector?

Yes. It analyses the pitch content of the whole track and reports the most likely key, along with the Camelot code used for DJ mixing.

How does key detection work?

It builds a profile of which musical notes appear most across the song and matches that against the 24 major and minor keys, picking the best fit. Songs that change key may show the most dominant one.

How accurate is the BPM detection?

Very good on tracks with a steady beat. Because tempo is ambiguous by an octave, the tool also notes the half- and double-time values — pick whichever matches how you count.

Does it upload my audio?

No. Everything runs in your browser; your file never leaves your device.

What audio formats are supported?

Any format your browser can decode — MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, OGG and FLAC.

Is it really free?

Completely — no signup and no limits.
