How to Build a Vocal Chain

A vocal chain is simply the ordered set of plugins you run a lead vocal through to take it from a raw recording to a polished, upfront part. The reliable order is: clean-up and gain first, then subtractive EQ, then compression, then de-essing, then tone-shaping EQ and saturation, and finally the effects sends for reverb and delay. Each stage feeds the next, so the sequence matters as much as the settings. Why the order of a vocal chain matters

Signal flows through your inserts top to bottom, and every plugin reacts to whatever the one before it hands over. Put a bright tone boost before a compressor and the compressor will clamp down hard every time an “s” flares up. Put your de-esser after a big presence boost and it has to fight the harshness you just created. Get the order right and each stage does one clean job, so you can use gentler settings everywhere and the result sounds natural rather than squashed.

There is no single legal order — engineers move blocks around for good reasons, and you should too once you know why. But if you are unsure, the default below works for the vast majority of pop, rap, rock and singer-songwriter vocals. Learn it as a reliable starting point, then break it deliberately when a specific voice asks for it.

Stage one: clean up the recording and set your gain

Before any tone or dynamics work, get the raw file in order. Trim silences, fade out breaths you do not want, and comp your best takes into one continuous performance. Then set a sensible level. Aim for peaks landing somewhere comfortably below clipping — a rough guide is peaks around -6 dBFS with plenty of headroom, so the plugins downstream have room to work. This is also the stage for surgical repair: a high-pass filter to remove sub-rumble below roughly 80–100 Hz (a little lower for deep voices), plus spot fixes for any clicks, pops or plosives. Do the boring clean-up now so the musical decisions later are not fighting a messy source.

Stage two: subtractive EQ to remove the problems

The first tonal move is corrective, and it should mostly be cuts. You are clearing out what does not belong before you shape what does. Reach for your stock EQ and work subtractively:

  • High-pass: if you did not already, roll off the rumble below about 80–100 Hz so the low end stays clean.
  • Tame boxiness: a gentle cut somewhere in the 200–500 Hz region removes the muddy, boxy build-up that clouds most vocals.
  • Hunt harsh resonances: if a specific frequency rings out — often somewhere in the 1–4 kHz range — narrow a band, sweep to find it, and dip it a couple of dB.

Keep these moves modest. The goal here is not to make the vocal sound finished, just to hand the compressor a cleaner signal. Stage three: compression to control the dynamics

With a clean signal coming in, compression evens out the natural loud-and-quiet swings so the vocal stays present instead of wandering in and out of the mix. For most vocals a ratio in the 2:1 to 4:1 range is a sensible starting point, aiming for roughly 3–6 dB of gain reduction on the loudest phrases — enough to steady the peaks, not so much that the life is gone.

Set a medium attack so consonants still snap through, and a release timed so the compressor recovers between words rather than pumping on every syllable. Make up the gain so the output matches the input loudness, then bypass and compare at equal volume to be sure you are improving things. A widely used trick is to split the work across two gentler compressors in series — a few dB each — which sounds more natural than one plugin doing all the lifting. Your DAW’s stock compressor handles this well; you do not need boutique gear to get a solid, controlled vocal.

Stage four: de-ess before you add brightness

Now tame sibilance, while the vocal is still relatively neutral. A de-esser targets the harsh “s” and “t” range — typically somewhere between 5 kHz and 8 kHz depending on the singer — and ducks it only when those sounds occur. Set the threshold so it reacts on the worst esses and leaves everything else untouched.

Doing this before your presence boost is deliberate: if you brighten first and de-ess second, the de-esser has to claw back harshness you just dialled in. Most DAWs ship with a capable de-esser, and for the majority of vocals that is all you need. On persistently spitty or heavily processed vocals, a dedicated de-esser or dynamic EQ with sharper detection can genuinely do a cleaner job than stock tools — that is one place a third-party plugin earns its keep. Stage five: tone-shaping EQ and gentle saturation

Only now do you make the vocal sound good, not just controlled. A second EQ handles the additive moves the corrective pass avoided:

  • Presence: a modest boost around 3–5 kHz helps consonants cut through and pulls the vocal forward. A couple of dB goes a long way.
  • Air: a gentle high shelf above about 10 kHz adds openness and sheen — use it sparingly and keep an ear on sibilance.

A touch of saturation after the EQ adds harmonic richness that makes the vocal read as louder and more present without you turning it up. This is where a clean vocal gets attitude and glue. Keep it subtle for a natural sound, or push it for an obvious effect on aggressive genres. Stage six: reverb and delay on sends, not inserts

Effects go last, and they belong on send/return channels rather than inserts so several tracks can share one space and you can process the wet signal on its own. A bone-dry vocal can sound disconnected, while too much reverb washes it out and pushes it to the back of the room — you are after depth without distance.

Two habits keep effects clean. First, high-pass the reverb and delay returns so the wet signal does not pile low-mid mud under the vocal, and roll off some highs on the return so it sits behind the dry voice. Second, reach for a short slap or tempo-synced eighth-note delay for width and interest before you drown the vocal in a long tail.
