Flex Time in Logic Pro lets you move, stretch, and quantize the timing of recorded audio without cutting it into pieces by hand. What Flex Time actually does (and how it differs from Flex Pitch)
Flex Time analyses the transients in an audio region — the sharp attacks of each drum hit, pluck, or syllable — and lets you stretch the audio between those points. Move one transient and Logic time-compresses the audio before it and time-expands the audio after it (or vice versa), so a late snare snaps back onto the beat while everything stays continuous.
Do not confuse it with Flex Pitch, which is the separate mode for correcting the pitch of monophonic vocals and melodies. Flex Time is about when a note happens; Flex Pitch is about what note it is. Both live under the same Flex system, but you choose one per track. This guide covers timing only.
How to use Flex Time in Logic Pro, step by step
Here is the core sequence. Once you have done it two or three times it takes seconds.
- Show Flex view. Click the Flex button in the control bar at the top of the main window — the icon looks like a small curved or bent waveform. (If you do not see it, right-click the control bar and add it via Customize Control Bar and Display.) This reveals a Flex control in the header of every audio track.
- Turn on Flex for the track. In the track header, click the Flex icon that has just appeared, or open the Flex pop-up menu. The first time you switch it on, Logic analyses the region for transients — you will see a brief progress message.
- Choose a flex mode. From the same pop-up, pick the mode that suits your material (the modes are explained in the next section). Logic often suggests a sensible default based on the audio, but you can and should override it if the result sounds off.
- Hover over the waveform to see flex markers. Vertical lines mark detected transients. Move your pointer over the upper half of a transient and click to place a white flex marker.
- Drag the marker to fix timing. Pull the note earlier or later until it lands where you want. Neighbouring audio stretches to fill the gap. Repeat for each note that needs correcting.
That is the manual approach. For rhythmic material you will often want the automatic route instead, covered further down under quantizing.
Choosing the right flex mode for your track
The flex mode is the single biggest factor in how clean the result sounds. Logic gives you six, and using the wrong one is the number-one cause of warbly, artefact-ridden audio. Match the mode to the source:
- Monophonic — for single-note melodic parts: lead vocals, bass, sax, a solo line. This is the mode you will reach for most on vocals.
- Polyphonic — for chordal or harmonically dense material: strummed guitar, piano, keys. It is more CPU-heavy but preserves overlapping notes far better than Monophonic.
- Rhythmic — for continuous rhythm parts with a clear groove, such as rhythm guitar or clavinet.
- Slicing — for drums and percussion. Instead of stretching, it cuts the audio at each transient and moves the slices, leaving the decay untouched. It can add a short crossfade or fill to cover gaps.
- Speed — changes playback speed like tape, so it shifts pitch as well as timing. A creative effect, not a transparent fix.
- Tempophone — a granular, deliberately artefact-heavy mode for special effects rather than correction.
If Monophonic makes a vocal sound like it is underwater, switch to Polyphonic. If Slicing leaves clicky gaps between drum hits, that is where the fill and crossfade settings earn their keep.
Quantizing audio to the grid with Flex
Once Flex is on, you can quantize audio almost exactly like MIDI. Select the region, open the Region inspector on the left, and set a Quantize value (1/8, 1/16, and so on). Logic snaps every detected transient to the nearest grid position. Reach for a Quantize Strength value below 100% if a hard snap sounds robotic — leaving a little of the original human timing usually feels better.
This is the fastest way to tighten a drum take or a rhythm guitar. For anything with a strong groove, quantize first, then go in by hand and fix only the handful of notes that still sound wrong. Fixing bad transient detection
Flex is only as good as the transients Logic finds. If markers land in the wrong places — common on legato vocals or overlapping toms — the stretching will sound wrong no matter which mode you pick. Fix the detection at the source:
- Open the region in the Audio Track Editor (press E, then select the track editor) or the File Editor, where you can see and edit transient markers directly.
- Use the transient detection controls to raise or lower sensitivity — raise it to catch soft ghost notes, lower it to ignore false triggers from bleed or noise.
- Add a missing transient by clicking where the note actually starts, or delete a stray one you do not want Flex to grab.
Cleaning up transients before you start dragging markers saves far more time than fighting the results afterwards.
Making regions follow tempo changes automatically
Flex also powers Logic’s tempo-following. In the Region inspector you will find a Flex & Follow setting with options such as Off, On, On + Bar, and On + Beat. Turn it on and the region will stretch to match the project tempo, and keep matching if you change the tempo later. “On + Beat” locks each beat to the grid, which is ideal for loops and imported samples that need to lock to your session. This is the setting to check first if an imported loop drifts out of time when your project tempo differs from the file’s original.
Common problems and quick fixes
A few things catch almost everyone the first time:
- No flex markers appear. You have not enabled Flex view in the control bar, or Flex is off for that specific track. Both have to be on.
- Vocals sound smeared. Wrong mode — switch from Rhythmic or Polyphonic to Monophonic, and only stretch as far as you truly need.
- Drums click or gap after Slicing. Adjust the fill and crossfade, or nudge the following slice slightly to cover the seam.
- Timing shifts you did not intend. Extreme drags stretch the audio between markers too. Lock the notes on either side by placing flex markers on them first so only the target note moves.
- Everything sounds worse. Reset the region — turning Flex off for the track discards the edits and returns the original audio, so you can start clean.
If you are new to editing recorded takes in general, it is worth pairing this with solid tracking habits — good gain staging and a clean performance mean you need Flex far less. And once the timing is tight, the same region is ready for the rest of your vocal mixing chain.
Flex Time is a stock feature, so you do not need to buy anything to get professional timing. Does Flex Time change the pitch of my audio?
Not in the timing modes. Monophonic, Polyphonic, Rhythmic, and Slicing preserve pitch while they stretch the audio. Only the Speed mode shifts pitch, because it changes playback speed like tape. If you want to correct pitch, use Flex Pitch instead, which is a separate mode on the same Flex menu.
Why does my vocal sound robotic after quantizing?
A 100% quantize snaps every syllable dead onto the grid, which kills natural feel. Lower the Quantize Strength in the Region inspector so some of the original timing survives, and undo the quantize on any words where the human phrasing mattered. Small imperfections are what make a vocal sound real.
Can I use Flex Time on drums without artefacts?
