How to Fix a Boomy Bass in Your Mix

A boomy bass is the low end that sounds fine on one note and overwhelming on the next, drowning the mix in a woolly, one-note thud. It is the flip side of a weak bass: instead of disappearing, it dominates. The cause is almost always a few resonant frequencies that spike far louder than the rest, often made worse by an untreated room. This guide gives you the precise EQ, dynamic EQ and compression moves to tame the boom while keeping the weight and warmth that make a bass feel powerful.

Find the resonant note that is booming

Boominess is rarely the whole bass; it is usually one or two frequencies ringing much louder than the rest. To find them, insert an EQ, set a narrow band with a big +6 dB boost, and sweep slowly through 60-250 Hz while the song plays. The frequency that jumps out painfully is your culprit. Cut the right frequencies to fix a boomy bass

Once located, treat the boom with surgical cuts rather than a broad low-shelf reduction, which would thin the whole bass.

  • Notch the resonant peak with a narrow 3-6 dB cut, usually somewhere in 80-150 Hz where boom lives.
  • Cut 2-4 dB around 200-250 Hz if the bass sounds thick and woolly rather than boomy low down.
  • Scoop 2-4 dB around 300-500 Hz to clear mud that reads as boom in a dense mix.
  • High-pass below 30-40 Hz to remove subsonic energy that makes the bass feel uncontrolled without adding useful weight.

Make the narrowest cut that solves the problem. Over-wide cuts remove the body you want to keep, so a tight Q on the resonance is your friend here.

Use dynamic EQ for a boom that comes and goes

If only certain notes boom, a static cut will thin the notes that were already fine. This is exactly what dynamic EQ solves: it only cuts when the boom frequency exceeds a threshold. Set a dynamic band at your resonant frequency, with a threshold that engages 3-5 dB of reduction only on the loud, boomy notes and leaves the quieter ones untouched. This preserves the bass’s fullness on well-behaved notes while automatically taming the ones that jump out. It is the single most effective tool for a boomy bass that varies note to note, and far more musical than riding a fader or notching statically.

Compress to even out the boom

Uneven note-to-note level is itself a form of boominess, because the loud notes bloom while the quiet ones vanish. Firm compression evens this out: try 4:1, a medium attack of 15-30 ms, a release around 100-150 ms, and 4-8 dB of gain reduction on the loudest notes. Rule out your room

Often the bass is fine and your room is lying to you. Standing waves in untreated rooms create bass buildup at certain frequencies right where you sit, so you cut low end that was never actually too loud, then your mix sounds thin everywhere else. Signs of a room problem: the boom changes dramatically when you move your head, or your mixes are consistently bass-heavy or bass-light on other systems.

Before carving aggressively, check the mix on headphones and a second speaker. If the boom is only obvious on your monitors, treat the room with bass trapping rather than the track, or at least reference on headphones for low-end decisions. Keep the low end mono

Stereo processing on bass causes phase issues that can read as uneven, boomy low end, especially when a system sums to mono. Keep everything below roughly 120 Hz mono using a utility or the mono-below control in your EQ. A centered, mono low end is inherently tighter and more predictable than a wide one.

A tidy workflow

  • Sweep to find the resonant boom frequency.
  • Notch it with a narrow 3-6 dB cut.
  • Use dynamic EQ if the boom varies note to note.
  • Compress (4:1, 4-8 dB reduction) to even out levels.
  • High-pass below 30-40 Hz and mono the low end below ~120 Hz.

Fix the resonance first and most other symptoms of a boomy bass disappear. The goal is a low end that is consistent from note to note and translates the same on your monitors, your phone and a car, so the bass supports the song instead of swallowing it.
