How to Fix a Boomy Mix: Tame the Low End

A boomy mix is drowning in uncontrolled low end. The bass notes are wildly uneven, some booming out while others vanish, the kick turns to a woolly thud, and the whole mix feels bloated and tiring to listen to at volume. Boominess usually lives higher than true sub-bass, in the 80-250 Hz region, and it is one of the most common problems for anyone mixing in an untreated room where low frequencies build up unpredictably. Fixing a boomy mix means controlling that low-mid energy with precise EQ and dynamics, and just as importantly, making sure you can actually trust what your speakers are telling you.

Here is how to tighten a boomy low end with concrete settings, from the individual tracks to the master.

Where the boom lives in a boomy mix

It helps to divide the low end into zones. Genuine sub-bass sits below 60 Hz, the fundamental punch of kick and bass lives around 60-120 Hz, and boom and boxiness pile up around 120-250 Hz. A boomy mix almost always has an excess in that 120-250 Hz band, where the bass body and the low-mids of everything else combine into a resonant, uneven mush. The classic culprit is a room mode inflating one or two notes, so a bass line sounds even in the arrangement but wildly uneven in the mix.

The first diagnostic move is to solo the bass and play a scale. If certain notes leap out or disappear, you are hearing resonance rather than performance, and static level automation plus dynamic EQ will fix it better than a single broad cut.

EQ and dynamics that fix a boomy mix

Start on the bass and kick, then work outward. Use a parametric EQ such as FabFilter Pro-Q and apply these targeted moves:

  • High-pass ruthlessly. Anything that is not bass or kick has no business below 100 Hz. High-pass vocals at 80-100 Hz, guitars at 100-120 Hz, keys and pads at 120-150 Hz. Removing the rumble that every track contributes cleans up most of the boom before you touch the bass itself.
  • Cut the boom band. Sweep a narrow bell between 120 Hz and 250 Hz to find the boomiest frequency, then cut 3-5 dB with a Q around 2. On most boomy mixes this lands near 150-200 Hz.
  • Tighten the bass with a fast release. Compress the bass at a ratio of 4:1, attack around 15-25 ms, release near 80-120 ms, aiming for 4-6 dB of gain reduction to even out the uneven notes. A transparent compressor such as FabFilter Pro-C keeps the sustain steady so no single note booms.
  • Roll off unused sub. If your mix has rumble below 30 Hz that only eats headroom, high-pass the master or the low buses around 25-30 Hz to remove inaudible energy that inflates the low end.

Separate the kick and bass so neither booms

When kick and bass both occupy the same low band, they sum into boom every time they hit together. Divide the territory: boost the kick around 60-80 Hz and dip the bass slightly there, then boost the bass around 100-120 Hz and dip the kick there. Each keeps its own pocket instead of stacking.

Sidechain compression seals the deal. Sidechain the bass to the kick with a fast attack, quick release, and 2-4 dB of ducking so the bass momentarily drops out of the way each time the kick lands. This prevents the two low-end sources from ever booming together and is the single most effective trick for a tight, controlled bottom.

The monitoring problem behind most boomy mixes

Here is the uncomfortable truth: a boomy mix is very often not too boomy at all, but mixed in a room that hides the low end, causing the engineer to add bass to compensate. Untreated rooms build up strong resonances between 80 and 200 Hz that make you hear too little bass at the mix position, so you overcompensate and the mix booms everywhere else. Before you commit to big cuts, fix the trust problem:

  • Add bass trapping. Thick corner bass traps are the highest-value acoustic treatment for taming low-end buildup and are the real fix for a room that lies to you.
  • Reference constantly. Check the mix on headphones, in the car, and on a phone speaker. If it sounds boomy everywhere except your studio, trust the other systems and cut.

Once the tracks are controlled, keep the master gentle: a wide 1-2 dB cut around 180 Hz is usually all the mix bus needs, since anything more affects every element and can hollow out the mix. High-pass everything that is not bass, cut the 150-200 Hz boom, tighten the bass dynamically, and treat your room, and a boomy mix becomes a tight, punchy low end.
