  • Tame the boxiness: a gentle cut somewhere in the 200–500 Hz region removes the “muddy” or “boxy” build-up that clouds a vocal, especially when it overlaps with guitars and keys.
  • Add presence: a modest boost around 3–5 kHz helps consonants cut through and brings the vocal forward. Small moves — a couple of dB — go a long way.
  • Add air (optional): a gentle high shelf above about 10 kHz adds openness and sheen. Use sparingly, and watch for sibilance.

Even with automation, a vocal has natural dynamic swings that make it wander back and forth in the mix. Compression evens those out so the voice stays present and glued to the track. For most vocals, a ratio in the 2:1 to 4:1 range is a sensible starting point. Aim for roughly 3–6 dB of gain reduction on the loudest phrases — enough to control the peaks, not so much that the life is squeezed out.

Set a medium attack so the initial consonant still snaps through, and a release timed so the compressor recovers between words rather than pumping. Then make up the gain so the compressed vocal matches its previous loudness, and compare bypassed versus engaged at equal volume. Many engineers split the work across two gentler compressors in series — a few dB each — which sounds more natural than one plugin doing all the lifting. All that presence and air you added can push “s” and “t” sounds into harsh, spitty territory. Most DAWs ship with a capable de-esser, and for the majority of vocals that is all you need.
