- Right-click the control. A context menu appears.
- Choose Create automation clip. FL Studio adds a new clip to the Playlist (and a matching track), pre-linked to that exact parameter.
- Open the Playlist. You’ll see a horizontal line with two points — the start and end of the automation.
- Left-click on the line to add a point. Drag points up and down to change the value, and left/right to change the timing.
- Grab the small handle that sits between two points to set the tension — this bends the curve from a straight ramp into an ease-in or ease-out. Right-click that handle to pick a curve type (single curve, smooth, hold, stairs, and so on).
Play the project and the parameter now moves by itself. The automation clip lives in the Playlist like any other clip, so you can move it, copy it, or shorten it to reuse the movement elsewhere.
How to automate in FL Studio by recording your moves live
Drawing points is precise, but sometimes you want the human feel of tweaking a knob by hand. FL Studio can record your live movements, which is often the fastest way to automate in FL Studio when you’re chasing a vibe rather than an exact shape.
- Click the small arrow next to the record button (top transport bar) and make sure Automation is ticked in the recording filter. This tells FL Studio to capture parameter moves, not just notes or audio.

Right-click a knob and choose Edit events to open the event editor, a small window where you draw the value as a line over the pattern length. Events are pattern-based rather than song-based, so they’re best for short, repeating movements. For anything that spans the whole arrangement, an automation clip in the Playlist is the better choice because it isn’t tied to a single pattern.
Automate mixer effects and plugin parameters
Automation isn’t limited to synths — it’s where mixing gets interesting. Any knob inside a stock effect can be automated the same way. Load Fruity Parametric EQ 2, Fruity Reeverb 2, Fruity Delay or Fruity Limiter onto a Mixer track, right-click the parameter you want moving — a band’s frequency, the reverb’s wet level, the delay feedback — and choose Create automation clip.
A common use is a filter sweep on a build: automate the cutoff of a Fruity Filter from low to fully open across four or eight bars, then drop the beat. Another is a volume fade: automate the Mixer track’s volume down to silence over the last bar for a clean ending.
Third-party plugins expose their parameters to FL Studio too. - Nothing moves on playback. Check you’re in Song mode, not Pattern mode — automation clips live in the Playlist, so pattern-only playback ignores them.
- “Create automation clip” is missing. A few internal controls can’t be automated, and some VST parameters need Browse parameters first. Try the wrapper’s settings menu.
- The move is too jerky or too smooth. That’s the tension handle between points. Drag it, or right-click it to switch curve types.
- Recorded automation looks messy. Use the point menu’s smoothing and thin out options, or delete stray points by right-clicking them.
- You automated the wrong parameter. Right-click the automation clip’s name in the Playlist track header to see and re-link what it controls.
- Values jump at loop points. Make sure the clip’s start and end values match if you want a seamless loop.
