How to EQ Vocals in Logic Pro

The fastest way to EQ vocals in Logic Pro is to add the stock Channel EQ to your vocal track, switch on the analyser so you can see the sound, then work in this order: high-pass to clear the rumble, cut the muddy and boxy frequencies, add a touch of presence around 3–5 kHz, and finish with a gentle high shelf for air. Why EQ vocals in Logic Pro at all?

A raw vocal recording almost never fits neatly into a mix on its own. It carries low-end rumble from the room and the mic stand, a build-up of “mud” in the low mids that clashes with guitars and synths, and often a boxy or nasal quality from the recording space. EQ is simply a set of volume controls split across the frequency spectrum, so you can turn down the parts that cause problems and gently lift the parts that help the voice cut through. The goal isn’t to make the vocal loud — that’s the fader’s job — it’s to make it clear, so a listener understands every word without straining.

Logic Pro ships with everything you need for this. The main tool is the Channel EQ, an eight-band parametric EQ with a real-time frequency analyser built in. You won’t need a single third-party plugin to get a professional result.

Add Logic’s Channel EQ to your vocal track

Select your vocal track so its channel strip appears on the left of the main window (or open the Mixer with the X key). Then:

  1. Find the EQ area at the top of the channel strip, just above the Audio FX slots. Double-click the empty EQ graph and Logic inserts a Channel EQ automatically. (You can also click an empty Audio FX slot and choose EQ → Channel EQ → Stereo/Mono.)
  2. The Channel EQ window opens with eight bands laid out left to right — a high-pass filter, a low shelf, four parametric bands, a high shelf, and a low-pass filter.
  3. Click the Analyzer button (top of the plugin) so you can see the vocal’s frequency content move in real time as it plays. Seeing the sound makes every decision easier.

Play the vocal in a loop while you work, ideally alongside the rest of the mix rather than soloed. A vocal EQ’d in solo often sounds wrong the moment the music comes back in.

How to EQ vocals in Logic Pro, step by step

Here’s the core sequence. Work from the bottom of the spectrum upward — it keeps your decisions logical and stops you chasing problems you’d have removed anyway.

1. High-pass to clear the low end. Grab Band 1 (the leftmost point, a high-pass filter) and drag it up to roughly 80–100 Hz for most voices. This removes rumble, mic-stand thumps and plosive energy without thinning the voice. On a deep male voice, keep it lower, around 70 Hz; on a bright female or child voice you can push toward 110 Hz. Turn the filter on by clicking its band button if it isn’t already active.

2. Cut the mud. Vocals often pile up energy around 200–400 Hz that makes them sound thick or “boomy”. Use one of the parametric bands, pull it down by 2–4 dB with a medium width, and sweep it until the vocal opens up. Small cuts here do a lot of work.

3. Chase down boxiness. A boxy, cardboard-tube quality usually lives between 300 Hz and 600 Hz. To find the exact spot, make a temporary narrow boost of a few dB, drag it slowly across that range until the annoying resonance jumps out, then flip the gain to a cut and widen it slightly. This “boost, sweep, cut” trick is the single most useful EQ technique you’ll learn.

4. Add presence. To help the vocal cut through, add a gentle, wide boost of 1–3 dB somewhere between 3 kHz and 5 kHz. This is where consonants and intelligibility live. Don’t overdo it — too much here gets harsh fast.

5. Add air. Use the high shelf (Band 7) to lift everything above roughly 10–12 kHz by 1–3 dB. This adds an open, expensive-sounding sheen. Modern condenser recordings often already have plenty of top end, so use your ears rather than a fixed number.

That’s it for the essential shape. Toggle the Channel EQ’s master on/off (power) button to compare with and without — if the “off” version sounds just as good, you’ve overdone something.

Fix harshness and sibilance the right way

The most common vocal problem after mud is harshness — a piercing edge, or hissy “s” and “t” sounds (sibilance). It’s tempting to fix this with a big EQ cut, but a static cut dulls the whole vocal because the harshness only appears on certain words.

For the “ess” sounds specifically, reach for Logic’s stock DeEsser 2 instead of the Channel EQ. Insert it in an Audio FX slot after the EQ, set its detection frequency to the sibilant range (usually 5–8 kHz), and let it reduce those peaks only when they occur. For a broader harshness around 2–4 kHz, a small, wide Channel EQ cut of 1–2 dB is usually enough.

If you find yourself constantly fighting harshness that changes moment to moment, a dynamic EQ — which only cuts when a frequency gets too loud — handles it far more transparently than static EQ. Logic’s stock EQs are static, so this is one of the few genuine reasons to reach for a third party. Common mistakes when EQ’ing vocals in Logic

  • Boosting instead of cutting. When something sounds wrong, your instinct is to boost what’s missing. Usually it’s better to cut what’s clashing — it keeps the vocal natural and your levels under control.
  • EQ’ing in solo. A vocal only has to sound good in the mix. Always check your moves with the rest of the track playing.
  • Using huge, narrow boosts. Wide, gentle moves sound musical; tall spikes sound artificial. Save narrow bands for cutting specific resonances.

EQ rarely works alone. A typical Logic vocal chain runs: Channel EQ (subtractive — high-pass and problem cuts) → Compressor → a second, lighter EQ pass for tone (presence and air) → DeEsser → reverb and delay on sends.
