How to Master for Apple Music & Sound Check

To master for Apple Music well, you need to know how Apple’s Sound Check normalisation behaves and how its AAC encoding treats your peaks. Apple sits in the same loudness-normalised world as Spotify, so the fundamentals are shared, but there are a few Apple-specific details — the Sound Check reference level, the AAC codec’s peak behaviour, and the optional Apple Digital Masters programme — that are worth getting right so your track translates cleanly across iPhones, HomePods and CarPlay.

Sound Check and the loudness target when you master for Apple Music

Apple Music applies loudness normalisation through Sound Check, which is on by default for many listeners. It references playback to approximately -16 LUFS integrated — slightly quieter than Spotify’s -14. In practice this difference is small and you do not need a separate master for it: a single master aimed at around -14 LUFS works across every major platform, because Apple will simply turn it down a touch to reach its reference. What matters is that you are not fighting the normalisation with a crushed file.

  • Integrated loudness: -14 LUFS is a safe universal target; if you master an Apple-first release you can aim nearer -16 LUFS and preserve even more dynamics.
  • True-peak ceiling: -1 dBTP as standard. Apple explicitly recommends leaving headroom because AAC encoding creates inter-sample peaks that can clip a file mastered to 0 dBFS.
  • Do not chase loudness: Sound Check turns loud masters down, so density beyond genre norms buys you nothing but distortion at matched volume.

AAC encoding and why headroom protects you

Apple Music streams AAC. When a lossless PCM file is converted to AAC, the reconstructed waveform can overshoot the original sample peaks, producing true-peak values above your DAW’s reading — sometimes by more than 1 dB on dense, bright material. If you master to a sample-peak ceiling of 0 or -0.1 dBFS, those overshoots clip on the listener’s device. Setting your limiter to a genuine true-peak ceiling of -1 dBTP (with true-peak detection switched on) gives the encoder room to work without clipping. For very bright or transient masters, -1.5 dBTP is a defensible, safer choice.

Verify the encoded result, do not assume it. The codec preview in iZotope Ozone auditions the AAC conversion so you can hear and meter any post-encode clipping before delivery. An independent meter such as Youlean Loudness Meter confirms your integrated LUFS and true-peak numbers so you are not trusting a single plugin’s readout.

Apple Digital Masters and hi-res delivery

Apple runs an optional quality programme called Apple Digital Masters (formerly Mastered for iTunes). Tracks that qualify are encoded from a high-resolution source using Apple’s tools and can carry the ADM badge. You do not need it to release on Apple Music, and the audible difference on a well-made 44.1 kHz master is subtle, but if your distributor supports it the requirements are sensible mastering hygiene: deliver a high-resolution source, keep true-peaks under control, and avoid clipping. Delivering a 24-bit WAV at the project’s native sample rate (often 44.1 or 48 kHz, or a genuine 88.2/96 kHz session) satisfies the source-quality expectation.

  • Bit depth: 24-bit for delivery; add TPDF dither only if you must drop to 16-bit.
  • Sample rate: deliver at native rate — do not upsample a 44.1 kHz project to fake hi-res.
  • Format: lossless WAV or FLAC; never submit an MP3 as the master.

A practical Apple Music mastering chain

The chain mirrors any modern streaming master. Start with gentle broad EQ — perhaps a 1 dB high-shelf above 10 kHz for air and a 0.5-1 dB low-shelf around 80 Hz for weight, plus a narrow cut only where a resonance genuinely bothers you. Add 1-2 dB of bus compression for glue with a slow attack and auto release. If a specific band builds up (a boomy 150-250 Hz, a harsh 3-5 kHz), tame it by 1-2 dB with a dynamic EQ or multiband such as FabFilter Pro-MB, acting only when it pumps. Finish with a true-peak limiter — FabFilter Pro-L 2 is a clean, well-metered choice — set to -1 dBTP with input gain raised until you read about -14 LUFS integrated at just 2-4 dB of gain reduction on peaks.
