How to Master for YouTube (LUFS & Loudness)

Learning to master for YouTube matters because YouTube is now one of the biggest places people actually listen to music — official videos, lyric videos, live sessions and full album uploads. Like Spotify and Apple Music, YouTube applies loudness normalisation, so a crushed master gets turned down rather than sounding louder. This guide covers the loudness target YouTube references, the headroom its codecs need, and a chain that keeps your uploads punchy and clean on phones, TVs and laptop speakers.

YouTube’s loudness normalisation and the target to master for YouTube

YouTube normalises playback loudness for content above its reference and references around -14 LUFS integrated. Upload something louder and YouTube reduces the playback gain to bring it toward that level; upload something quieter and YouTube generally leaves it alone rather than turning it up (this is a key difference from some music services). The practical consequences:

  • Integrated loudness: target about -14 LUFS so YouTube applies little or no gain reduction and your dynamics survive. You can check what YouTube did after upload by right-clicking the player and viewing “Stats for nerds”, which shows the content loudness and normalisation gain applied.
  • True-peak ceiling: keep peaks at or below -1 dBTP. YouTube re-encodes audio to Opus and AAC at multiple bitrates, and lossy encoding adds inter-sample peaks; one dB of headroom prevents clipping on playback.
  • Because YouTube rarely turns quiet tracks up, do not master far below -14 LUFS thinking the platform will compensate — it usually will not, and your video will feel weak next to others.

Why loud masters lose on YouTube too

The same loudness-war logic that failed on Spotify fails on YouTube. Since playback is normalised toward -14 LUFS, a master smashed to -8 LUFS is turned down roughly 6 dB to sit beside a -14 LUFS master at equal volume — and at that matched volume the crushed track sounds flatter and more distorted, because you traded transient punch for loudness the platform removed. A master with a real kick transient, controlled dynamics and clean highs wins the matched comparison every time. Always A/B your master against a reference at the same integrated loudness, not by raw fader level.

The video-encode wrinkle: audio in a video container

Mastering for YouTube adds one layer that pure audio platforms do not: your audio is muxed into a video file and re-encoded on upload. A few practical points follow from that.

  • Deliver the highest-quality audio you can inside the video. Encode the video’s audio track as PCM/WAV or AAC at 320-384 kbps rather than a low-bitrate stream, so YouTube re-encodes from a clean source.
  • Keep the -1 dBTP ceiling in the exported audio. The video encoder does not add headroom for you; if your bounce peaks at 0 dBFS, YouTube’s Opus/AAC conversion can clip.
  • Sample rate 48 kHz is a natural choice for video since it is the video-standard rate, but a 44.1 kHz music master muxed into the video is fine too — do not upsample the audio just to match.

Confirm your numbers before you render the video. A meter such as Youlean Loudness Meter reads integrated LUFS across the whole track and shows true-peak so you can verify -14 LUFS at -1 dBTP independently of your limiter.

A YouTube-ready mastering chain

Keep the moves gentle and let the limiter finish the job. Start with broad tonal EQ: a 1 dB high-shelf above 10 kHz for air that survives lossy encoding, a 0.5-1 dB low-shelf around 80-100 Hz for weight, and narrow cuts only where a resonance genuinely bothers you. Add 1-2 dB of slow-attack bus compression for cohesion. Where a band builds up unpleasantly — boomy 150-250 Hz or harsh 3-5 kHz — control it by 1-2 dB with a multiband or dynamic EQ such as FabFilter Pro-MB, acting only on the pumping. Finish with a true-peak limiter — FabFilter Pro-L 2 or the limiter in iZotope Ozone — set to -1 dBTP, pushing input gain until you read about -14 LUFS with only 2-4 dB of gain reduction on peaks.
