How to Record Vocals and Guitar Together

Singer-songwriters often perform best when voice and instrument move as one, so the temptation to record vocals and guitar together in a single live take is strong, and for good reason: the phrasing, dynamics, and feel lock in a way that overdubbing rarely recaptures. The trade-off is control. When both sources are live at once, each mic hears the other, so this guide focuses on getting a natural performance while keeping bleed manageable and levels clean.

Two mics is the right way to record vocals and guitar together

You can capture both with one mic in the middle, but you sacrifice all independent control: you can’t turn the guitar down against the vocal, and EQ moves hit both. The far better approach is a two-mic setup, one mic dedicated to the voice and one to the guitar, each on its own channel of your interface.

  • Vocal mic: a large-diaphragm condenser (e.g. Rode NT1, AT2035) for detail and body, or a dynamic like a Shure SM7B if your room is noisy or the guitar is loud.
  • Guitar mic: a small-diaphragm condenser aimed at the 12th fret, as you’d use for any acoustic.

Two channels let you balance, EQ, and process voice and guitar separately at mix time, which is the whole point.

Placement to minimise bleed

The enemy here is each mic picking up the wrong source. You reduce that with directionality and geometry, using the fact that cardioid mics reject sound arriving from behind them (the null).

  • Use cardioid patterns on both mics so each rejects sound from its rear.
  • Angle the mics so each one’s null points at the other source. Aim the vocal mic down slightly toward the mouth so its back is toward the guitar; aim the guitar mic up toward the fretboard so its back is toward the voice.
  • Keep the vocal mic about 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) from the mouth with a pop filter, and the guitar mic 20-30 cm from the 12th fret.
  • Maximise the distance between the two mics within a comfortable playing position; a little extra separation dramatically cuts bleed.

You won’t eliminate bleed and you don’t need to. The goal is enough separation that you can adjust each source independently and that the leaked sound is quiet and flattering rather than hollow.

Watch phase between the two mics

Because both mics hear both sources from slightly different distances, phase issues can hollow out your sound. Follow a rough 3:1 rule: the distance between the two mics should be at least three times the distance from each mic to its source. So if the vocal mic is 20 cm from the mouth, keep the two mics at least 60 cm apart. Then check by summing to mono and listening; if the low end or body disappears, increase the spacing or flip polarity on one channel until it sounds full.

Levels and gain staging

Set each channel’s gain independently. Have the performer sing and play at full performance intensity, then set the vocal preamp so peaks land around -12 to -6 dBFS and do the same for the guitar. Vocals have unpredictable dynamic spikes, so leave a little extra headroom on the voice; a clipped vocal peak is unfixable. Don’t chase hot levels; conservative, clean signals are far easier to blend, especially with bleed in play. Record at 24-bit so quiet passages keep resolution.

Monitoring: latency and headphones

The performer must hear themselves naturally or the performance suffers. Use closed-back headphones to stop the click or backing track leaking into the mics, and enable your interface’s direct/zero-latency monitoring so the singer hears their voice and guitar with no delay. If you monitor through the DAW instead, keep the buffer small, around 128 samples, to keep round-trip latency low enough that it doesn’t distract the performer; raise it to 512 or higher only when you move on to mixing. A comfortable, low-latency headphone mix does more for the take than any plugin.

Room treatment and noise

With two open condensers, the room shows up twice, so control it:

  • Set up facing soft furnishings or an absorption panel, away from parallel bare walls, to reduce slap-back.
  • Put a rug down and hang a blanket behind the performer if the space rings.
  • Silence fans, fridges, phones, and chair creaks; both mics will catch them.
  • Keep clothing and jewellery quiet, and mind foot-tapping on hollow floors.

When to overdub instead

Recording together is ideal when the feel depends on the two moving as one, but be honest about the trade-off. If you need surgical control, want to double the guitar for width, or plan heavy processing on one source, overdubbing (guitar first to a click, then vocal, or vice versa) gives cleaner separation and more options. Many singer-songwriters record a live take for the feel, then overdub a corrective vocal or guitar pass if a section needs fixing, keeping the best of both.

Light mixing that respects the performance

Because both mics carry some of each source, mix gently to avoid pumping the bleed. High-pass the vocal around 80-100 Hz and the guitar around 60-80 Hz, dip vocal mud around 250 Hz, and add a soft air lift above 10 kHz. Keep compression modest, a slow 2:1 catching a few dB, so the natural dynamics of a live take survive.
