How to Self-Master Your Own Music (Step by Step)

Self mastering is the process of taking your finished mix and doing the final polish yourself, at home, instead of sending it to a mastering house. Done well, it gives you a track that is loud enough to compete on streaming, balanced across every playback system, and free of the clipping and harshness that give away an amateur release. The key to good self mastering is restraint plus real numbers: you are making small, deliberate moves toward documented targets, not slamming a limiter and hoping. This guide walks through the exact chain, the target loudness for each platform, and the safe ceilings that keep your master clean.

Before you start, make sure the mix is actually finished. Mastering cannot rescue a muddy low end, a harsh vocal, or a lopsided balance. If the mix has problems, fix them in the mix. Our mixing and mastering guide covers that stage in detail.

Set up before you touch a plugin

Good self mastering starts with honest monitoring and a clean starting point. Export your mix with headroom: aim for the mix bus to peak around -6 dBFS and to sit near -18 to -16 LUFS integrated before mastering. That headroom gives your mastering chain room to work without fighting an already-squashed file.

  • Bounce at full resolution. Render a 24-bit WAV at your project sample rate. Do not bounce to MP3 and master that.
  • Reference a commercial track. Load a professionally mastered song in a similar genre onto a muted track so you can A/B tone and loudness. A referencing plugin such as ADPTR MetricAB lets you level-match instantly so loudness does not fool your ears.
  • Meter honestly. Install a loudness meter such as Youlean Loudness Meter so you can read integrated LUFS and true-peak instead of guessing.

The self mastering chain, in order

Order matters. Each stage feeds the next, so build the chain the way a mastering engineer would rather than stacking plugins at random. Make every move gently and check it against your reference.

  • 1. Corrective EQ. Start by removing problems, not adding excitement. High-pass anything below 25-30 Hz to clear inaudible sub rumble that steals headroom. Then make broad, gentle tone moves: a wide 0.5-1.5 dB shelf or bell, never surgical boosts. If the mix is dull, a gentle high shelf of +1 dB above 10 kHz adds air. If it is boomy, a broad -1 dB around 200-300 Hz cleans it up. A transparent EQ like FabFilter Pro-Q is ideal here.
  • 2. Dynamic control. If one frequency band jumps around, a multiband compressor or dynamic EQ can tame it. Common target: gently control a boomy bass with 1-2 dB of gain reduction below 120 Hz only when it peaks. Keep ratios low, around 1.5:1 to 2:1, and aim for no more than a couple of dB of reduction so it stays invisible.
  • 3. Glue compression. A single bus compressor with a slow attack (around 30 ms), auto or slow release, a 2:1 ratio, and just 1-2 dB of gain reduction pulls the mix together. If you hear the mix pumping or losing punch, back off.
  • 4. Optional saturation or tone shaping. A touch of harmonic saturation adds perceived loudness and warmth. Use it in tiny amounts, then A/B bypass to confirm it helps.
  • 5. Limiter. This is the loudness stage. Set the output ceiling to -1 dBTP (true peak) so streaming codecs do not push you into distortion, then raise the input gain until you hit your target loudness.

Loudness targets that actually matter

The biggest self mastering mistake is chasing maximum loudness. Every major streaming service applies loudness normalization, which means an over-compressed master gets turned down anyway and just sounds flat and lifeless next to a dynamic one. Master for the target, not for the meter’s ceiling.

  • Streaming (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Tidal): these platforms normalize to roughly -14 LUFS integrated. Master most music between -14 and -9 LUFS depending on genre. Quieter, dynamic genres can sit at -14; loud modern pop and EDM often land around -9 to -8 and accept some turn-down.
  • True-peak ceiling: keep true peak at or below -1 dBTP everywhere. Lossy encoding (AAC, Ogg, MP3) can add peaks after conversion, and -1 dBTP gives the safety margin that prevents inter-sample clipping.
  • Club / DJ / loudness-critical release: you can push to -8 or -7 LUFS, but only if the mix supports it without smashing transients.

Aim your limiter for around 2-4 dB of gain reduction on the loudest sections. If you need more than that to hit your target, the mix is not loud enough at the source and you should revisit the mix rather than crush it here. Check your final integrated LUFS across the whole song, not just the chorus, because normalization reads the whole track.

Final checks before you export

Once the chain sounds right, run these checks. First, bypass the entire mastering chain and A/B against your reference and your raw mix at matched loudness. The master should sound like a clearer, fuller, slightly louder version of the mix, not a different song. Second, listen on at least three systems: monitors, cheap earbuds, and a phone speaker. Third, check the low end in mono, because bass problems hide in stereo. Fourth, confirm your metering: integrated LUFS at target, true peak at or below -1 dBTP, and no red on the limiter’s clip indicator.
