The moment the snare, bass and vocal all peak at once, the compressor pulls them down slightly as a single unit, then lets go. That shared movement is what people mean by “glue”: the instruments start breathing in the same rhythm instead of sitting as separate layers stacked on top of each other.
This is a completely different goal from channel compression, where you might tame an unruly vocal or add sustain to a bass. On a bus you are chasing cohesion and a touch of energy, not control. That is why the numbers are so much smaller — you are nudging, not clamping. If your gain-reduction meter is swinging past 5 or 6 dB on a mix bus, you have almost certainly gone too far, and the life will be draining out of the track rather than tightening it up.
Where to put a bus compressor in your session
There are three common places a bus compressor earns its keep, and they call for different amounts of it:
- The mix bus (master bus): one compressor across the entire mix, working hardest here — the classic “glue” job. Keep it gentle.
- The drum bus: all your drum channels routed to one group. You can push this harder for punch and attitude.
- Subgroups: backing vocals, a guitar section, a synth stack. Compressing these together helps a layered part read as one instrument.
Signal-chain order matters. On the mix bus, most engineers put broad “shaping” EQ before the compressor and any corrective or tonal EQ can sit either side depending on taste; a good default is subtractive EQ first, then the bus compressor, then any final tonal EQ or saturation. Whatever you decide, get your gain staging sensible first so the compressor sees a healthy level and is not being triggered by one stray peak.

These are starting points to dial in by ear, not laws — every mix is different, so trust the sound over the numbers.
Ratio: keep it low. On the mix bus, 1.5:1 to 2:1 is the sweet spot; 4:1 is about as high as you want to go before it stops feeling like glue and starts feeling like a grip. On a drum bus you can reach for 4:1 when you want obvious punch.
Attack: go slow, around 10–30 ms. A slower attack lets the transients — the initial snap of the snare, the pluck of a bass — pass through untouched before the compressor clamps down, which is what preserves punch. A fast attack on a mix bus tends to dull the whole thing and kill the very impact you are trying to keep.
Release: aim for the compressor to recover roughly in time with the song. Something in the 100–300 ms range, or an “auto” release setting, is a reliable start. Too fast and you get distortion or a pumping wobble; too slow and the compressor never lets go, so it stays clamped and the mix sounds squashed. A useful trick is to speed the release up until you hear it start to “breathe” with the tempo, then back off slightly.
Threshold: set it last, and set it by the meter. Bring the threshold down until you see only 1–3 dB of gain reduction on the loudest sections. That is the entire move on a mix bus. On a drum bus you might allow 3–6 dB when you want the drums to really pump.

Numbers get you in the ballpark; your ears do the rest. Here is a reliable order of operations:
- Insert the compressor on the bus with ratio at 2:1, attack around 30 ms, release on auto (or ~200 ms).
- Lower the threshold until you see about 2 dB of gain reduction on the busiest part of the song.
- Adjust the attack: slower if the mix lost its punch, a touch faster if the peaks feel loose and untamed.
- Adjust the release so the meter’s needle moves roughly in time with the groove — you want to feel the pump, not hear it fighting the music.
- Match the output (makeup gain) so the bypassed and engaged signals are the same loudness, then A/B them.
That last step is the one people skip, and it is the most important. A compressed signal usually sounds “better” simply because it is louder, and louder always wins a quick listen. Parallel (New York) compression: instead of compressing the whole bus, blend a heavily compressed copy underneath the dry signal.
