How to Master a Track in Ableton

To master in Ableton, you finalise a stereo mixdown on the Master track with a short chain of stock devices — usually a corrective EQ Eight, a gentle Glue Compressor, some Saturator for glue and warmth, a broad tonal EQ, and a Limiter to set final loudness. The goal is polish and translation, not a rescue mission: mastering makes an already-good mix louder, more balanced and consistent, but it cannot fix a broken mix.

Below is a practical, order-of-operations walkthrough using only devices that ship with Ableton Live. Prepare your mix before you master in Ableton

Mastering starts in the mix. Before you touch a single mastering device, go back to your project and make sure the mix itself is finished. Every fader balance, EQ move and compression decision should be done at the track level. If the vocal is buried or the low end is muddy, fix it in the mix — do not expect the master to save it. The single most important preparation step is headroom. Look at your Master track meter and aim for peaks around -6 dB, with no clipping (no red). If your mix is already slamming 0 dB, pull the Master fader down, or better, lower the individual channels so the whole mix has room to breathe. Export a stereo mixdown, or master on the Master track

You have two workable approaches in Ableton. The cleanest is to bounce your finished mix to a single stereo file (File menu, then Export Audio/Video), and re-import that WAV into a fresh, empty Live set. That gives you a static two-track master with no CPU load from your instruments and plugins, and it stops you from being tempted to keep remixing.

The faster approach is to build the master chain directly on the Master track of your existing project. This is fine for demos and self-releases, and it lets you flip back to the mix if something needs a tweak. Whichever you choose, the device chain that follows is identical. Add each device by dragging it from the browser onto the Master track (or the imported audio track) in the order below.

Build the mastering chain with stock Ableton devices

Order matters. Each device feeds the next, so build the chain left to right in the device view. Here is a reliable starting chain:

  1. Utility — first in the chain, use it to trim overall gain if the mix is hot, and to check mono compatibility with the Mono button. It is your simplest volume and width control.
  2. EQ Eight (corrective) — make surgical cuts here. A gentle high-pass around 20–30 Hz removes sub-sonic rumble. Pull down any single resonant frequency that jumps out. Keep moves small; a master EQ works in fractions of a decibel, not big boosts.
  3. Glue Compressor — this is Ableton’s bus compressor, modelled on a classic SSL-style unit, and it is built for exactly this job. Set a slow attack (10–30 ms) so transients pass through, a medium or Auto release, and a ratio of 2:1 or 4:1. Aim for just 1–2 dB of gain reduction on the loudest sections. You want it to “breathe” with the track, not pump.
  4. Saturator — add subtle harmonic drive for warmth and perceived loudness. Keep the Drive low and use the Dry/Wet or output to taste. A touch of saturation glues a mix together and makes it feel fuller before the limiter.
  5. EQ Eight (tonal) — a second EQ for broad, musical shaping. A wide, gentle high-shelf can add air; a small low-shelf can add weight. These are the “feel” moves, not the fixes.
  6. Limiter — always last. This sets your final ceiling and loudness. Set the Ceiling to -1.0 dB (or -0.3 to -1.0 dB) to leave true-peak headroom, then raise the Gain until you hit your target loudness without the sound turning flat and lifeless.

Control the low end and dynamics with Multiband Dynamics

If your low end is uneven — kick and bass fighting, or the whole bottom feeling flabby — reach for Multiband Dynamics (available in Live Suite). It splits the signal into low, mid and high bands so you can compress the bass separately from everything else. Set it after your Glue Compressor. A small amount of downward compression on just the low band tightens the bottom without dulling the highs. Do not overdo it; two or three decibels of movement per band is plenty on a master.

Set loudness with the Limiter and check your LUFS

Loudness is the part most people rush. The Limiter’s job is to catch peaks and raise level, but pushing it too hard flattens dynamics and adds distortion. Rather than chasing a number by ear alone, measure. Streaming platforms normalise playback loudness, so a hyper-loud master often just gets turned down — and sounds squashed next to competitors.

A widely used target for streaming is around -14 LUFS integrated, though many modern releases sit louder (-9 to -12 LUFS) for genre reasons. Common problems and quick fixes when mastering in Ableton

  • The master sounds squashed or lifeless. You are limiting too hard. Back off the Limiter Gain and let more dynamics through — a master that is 1 dB quieter but punchy beats a loud, flat one.
  • Harsh, brittle highs. Find the offending frequency with a narrow EQ Eight boost, sweep to locate it, then cut it gently. Ease off the Saturator if the drive is adding fizz.
  • The low end disappears on small speakers. Check mono, and make sure your kick and bass are not phase-cancelling. Add a touch of Saturator or a small low-shelf for harmonics the speaker can reproduce.
  • It sounds different after export. Enable dithering in the Export dialog when going to 16-bit, and export at the same sample rate as your project to avoid on-the-fly conversion artefacts.
