How to Use Space Designer in Logic

Space Designer in Logic Pro is a convolution reverb that recreates the sound of real rooms, halls, plates and creative spaces using recorded impulse responses. The short version: insert it on an aux (bus) channel, send your tracks to that bus, pick an impulse response that suits the material, then set the mix to fully wet and shape the length, pre-delay and EQ until the reverb sits behind the source instead of drowning it. What Space Designer actually does

Unlike an algorithmic reverb that simulates reflections with maths, Space Designer is a convolution reverb. It takes an impulse response — a short recording that captures how a physical or synthetic space responds to sound — and “stamps” that character onto whatever audio you feed it. That is why its factory library is organised by real environments: rooms, halls, churches, plates, springs, and a bank of warped and special-effect responses. How to open Space Designer in Logic Pro

The cleanest way to use any reverb is on a dedicated bus so multiple tracks can share one reverb, which saves CPU and glues the mix together. Here is the setup:

  1. In the Mixer, click an empty Audio FX insert slot on a track and choose Reverb → Space Designer. When Logic asks for a channel configuration, pick Stereo for most sources.
  2. To route it as a send instead, click a Sends slot on your source track and choose an available Bus (for example Bus 1). Logic automatically creates an Auxiliary channel for that bus.
  3. Insert Space Designer on that Aux channel’s Audio FX slot rather than on the track itself. Now any track can send to the same reverb.

Exact menu wording shifts slightly between Logic versions, but the path — Audio FX slot, then the Reverb category — is consistent. If you only want reverb on a single instrument, you can insert it directly on that channel and use the wet/dry controls to blend.

Choosing the right impulse response

With the plugin open, click the impulse response name at the top of the window (or use the settings/preset menu) to browse the library. The categories tell you most of what you need:

  • Rooms and small spaces — tight, short decays for adding realism to close-miked sources without obvious “tail”.
  • Halls and churches — long, lush decays for pads, strings, and dramatic vocals.
  • Plates — bright, dense reverb that flatters vocals and snares; a classic pop and rock choice.
  • Warped and special effects — non-realistic, tuned and rhythmic responses for sound design.

Audition a few. A general rule: the busier the arrangement, the shorter and darker the reverb should be. On a sparse ballad you can get away with a long hall; on a dense mix a short room keeps things clear. Setting the wet/dry balance correctly

This is where most beginners trip up. In Space Designer’s output section you will find separate level controls for the Dry (unprocessed) signal and the Reverb (wet) signal. How you set them depends on where the plugin lives:

  • On a send/aux channel: turn the Dry level all the way down and leave only the Reverb signal. The dry sound already comes through the original track, so you want the aux to be 100% wet. Then control the amount of reverb with the send knob on each track.
  • Directly on a track (insert): keep both Dry and Reverb up and balance them to taste — usually far more dry than wet.

Shaping the reverb: length, pre-delay and envelopes

Once you have a response you like, a handful of parameters turn a generic reverb into one that fits the song:

  1. Length stretches or compresses the impulse response as a percentage of its original size. Pull it down to shorten the tail without changing reverbs; push it up for a longer, more dramatic wash. Extreme settings can sound artificial, so nudge rather than yank.
  2. Pre-Delay inserts a short gap (in milliseconds) before the reverb starts. A little pre-delay keeps a vocal’s consonants clear by letting the dry sound land first, then the tail blooms behind it. Ten to forty milliseconds is a common starting range.
  3. Volume envelope — the graphical display shows the impulse response as a waveform with editable nodes. Drag the volume envelope to fade the tail in or out, or to carve a gated, abrupt ending for that punchy 80s snare effect.
  4. Filter and Density envelopes let you brighten or darken the tail over time and adjust how smooth or grainy it feels. These are most powerful when Space Designer is generating a synthesized impulse response rather than playing a sampled one.
  5. Reverse flips the impulse response so the reverb swells up into a hit — the classic reverse-reverb intake before a vocal line or downbeat.

Work in small moves and A/B against bypass constantly so you do not slowly bury the source.

EQ the reverb so it sits in the mix

Raw reverb often adds mud in the low-mids and harshness up top. Space Designer has a built-in output EQ section — use it to high-pass the reverb so it is not fighting your bass and kick, and to gently tame any brittle high frequencies. When to reach beyond the stock reverb

For 90% of home-studio work, Space Designer is genuinely all you need — do not buy a plugin to solve a problem the stock one already handles. That said, convolution reverbs excel at realism but can feel static, and there are moments (dense modulated ambiences, gigantic tunable algorithmic tails, shimmer effects) where a dedicated third-party reverb is a real upgrade rather than a duplicate. Common problems and quick fixes

  • The reverb sounds muddy. High-pass the reverb’s EQ and shorten the Length. Muddiness is almost always too much low-frequency tail.
  • Vocals lose intelligibility. Add pre-delay and cut the reverb send during dense sections, or automate it down.
  • CPU spikes. Convolution is processing-heavy. Use one shared reverb bus instead of many instances, and freeze tracks you are done editing.
