Because it only touches MIDI, it works on software instrument tracks — the ones running a Logic synth or sampler such as Alchemy, ES2, Sampler or Vintage instruments. It will not do anything on an audio track, an external MIDI track’s monitored audio, or a recorded vocal, because there’s no MIDI note stream for it to arpeggiate. How to add the arpeggiator in Logic to a software instrument
Getting the arpeggiator in Logic onto a track takes a few seconds once you know where the slot lives. Follow these steps in order:
- Create or select a software instrument track and load an instrument you can hear when you play — a pad, synth or piano works well for hearing every note.
- Open the Mixer or the channel strip in the Inspector on the left. At the very top of the channel strip, above the instrument slot, is the MIDI FX slot. It sits between the Setting menu and the instrument.
- Click the MIDI FX slot and choose Arpeggiator from the menu. The plugin window opens automatically.

Switch Latch on and the arpeggiator keeps playing your chord after you lift your fingers, so you can let a pattern run while you tweak knobs or reach for the mouse. Play a new chord and it takes over. There’s typically a Latch Mode option — the default holds and replaces chords, while other modes let new notes add to or transpose what’s already sounding. When you’re ready to commit, the reliable way to lock it in is to bounce the track to audio (or bounce in place), which prints exactly what you hear, arpeggiation and all. Keep a copy of the MIDI track so you can go back and re-program if the arrangement changes. Logic doesn’t offer a simple one-click way to convert MIDI FX output back into editable MIDI notes, so bouncing to audio is the dependable method rather than any hidden convert command.
Common problems and quick fixes
Most Arpeggiator trouble comes down to a handful of causes. Run through these before assuming something’s wrong:
- No sound at all. Check you’re on a software instrument track with an instrument loaded, and that you’re holding a chord — the arpeggiator needs at least two notes to have something to sequence, and needs you to actually sustain them.
- Only one note plays. You’re likely pressing keys one at a time. Hold the whole chord down together so the plugin has all the notes to work through.
- It won’t stop playing. Latch is on. Turn it off, or press the same chord again to reset it.
- Timing feels off or drifts. The Rate is tempo-synced, so confirm your project tempo is correct and that the instrument itself doesn’t have a slow attack softening the rhythm.
- Notes sound cut off or overlapping. Adjust note length in the Options panel — too short sounds clipped, too long makes fast rates smear together.
