To resample in Ableton Live, create a new audio track, set its Audio From input to Resampling, arm the track, and hit record. Producers reach for resampling constantly: to freeze a CPU-hungry chain, to glitch and reverse a hook, to build a one-shot for a sampler instrument, or just to commit to a sound and stop tweaking. Below is the exact, correct workflow in current versions of Live, plus the settings people usually get wrong.
What resampling actually does in Ableton Live
Resampling records the signal at Live’s master output — the same thing you hear in your monitors — and prints it to a new audio clip. It is not a special plugin or a hidden menu; it is simply an input source you choose on an audio track, sitting in the same Audio From list as your soundcard’s physical inputs and other tracks in the set.
Because it captures the master, resampling grabs the full mix by default: every unmuted track, the master chain, the lot. That is perfect when you want to bounce a finished loop, but it means that if you only want one element, you need to isolate that element first (more on that below). The recording is latency-compensated, so the printed clip lines up with the grid — you do not need to nudge it manually.
How to resample in Ableton: the step-by-step workflow
This works in both Session and Arrangement view. The In/Out section names are identical either way.
- Show the In/Out section. In the mixer, click the I-O button in the right-hand strip (Session view) so each track shows its Audio From / Audio To and Monitor menus. In Arrangement view the same routing appears in the track’s In/Out fold-out.
- Create a new audio track. Use Create > Insert Audio Track, or the shortcut Cmd+T (Mac) / Ctrl+T (Windows).
- Set Audio From to Resampling. On the new track, open the top Audio From dropdown and choose Resampling. This tells the track to record the master output rather than a physical input.
- Set the Monitor to Off (or Auto). Leave Monitor on Off for resampling. You are already hearing the audio through the master, so monitoring the resample track as well just doubles the signal and can cause a feedback loop.
- Arm the track. Click the round Arm Recording button on the resample track so it lights up.
- Record. Trigger recording the way you normally would — in Session view, click an empty clip slot’s record button on the armed track; in Arrangement view, hit the global Record button and press play. Let the section you want play all the way through, then stop.
- Find your clip. The new audio clip appears on the resample track. Live saves the underlying file into your project’s Samples/Recorded folder, so it travels with the set.
That is the whole loop. From here the clip behaves like any other audio in Live: you can warp it, reverse it, stretch it, or drag it straight into Simpler or Sampler to play it chromatically.
Resampling one track instead of the whole mix
Because Resampling prints the master, you will capture everything unless you isolate the source first. There are three reliable ways to do that:
- Solo the source. Solo the track (or Group) you want, arm your Resampling track, and record. Everything else is muted, so only the soloed sound reaches the master.
- Freeze and Flatten. Right-click the track and choose Freeze Track to render its output to a temporary file, then Flatten to convert it to a permanent audio clip. This is the cleanest way to commit a single instrument or heavy effect chain, and it frees up CPU. Note that Freeze renders that track in isolation, effects and all.
- Consolidate in Arrangement. Select a clip or time range on one track in Arrangement view and press Cmd+J / Ctrl+J to consolidate it into a single new sample. Handy for gluing an edited, chopped-up part back into one file.
Use Resampling when you want the combined result of several tracks; use Freeze/Flatten or Consolidate when you want exactly one track’s output.
Common problems and how to fix them
Most resampling headaches come down to a couple of settings.
- Silence in the recorded clip. Check three things: the track is armed, Audio From is set to Resampling (not Ext. In), and the source is actually playing during the record pass. If the master meter isn’t moving, there is nothing to capture.
- Doubled or distorted audio / feedback. This is nearly always the Monitor setting. Set the resample track’s Monitor to Off. On In, the track feeds its own input back into the master.
- Clipping on the printed sample. Resampling captures post-master, so if your master is peaking into the red, the sample bakes that clipping in. Give yourself headroom on the master before you record. Our free audio tools and loudness guide can help you set sensible levels.
- Timing feels off. Live latency-compensates resampling, so the clip should land on the grid. If a warped clip drifts, check that Warp is on and the clip’s tempo/BPM matches the set.
- Wrong elements captured. Remember it prints the whole master. Mute or solo to control exactly what reaches it before you record.
What to do with a resampled clip
Once you have the sample, the creative part begins. Drag it onto a MIDI track’s Simpler to play it as a one-shot or chop it across the pads. Reverse it for a riser, apply Warp modes (Beats, Texture, Complex Pro) for glitch and stretch effects, or bounce a lush reverb tail into audio so you can gate and reshape it — something you can’t do to a live effect return.
Resampling is also a mixing tool. Printing a busy chain to audio locks in the sound and lightens your CPU load, which matters on bigger sets. No. Resampling records the master output at your project’s sample rate and bit depth, so there is no quality loss versus what you were hearing. The only ways to degrade it are recording a master that is already clipping, or exporting the final file at a lower sample rate later.
