Why you need a loudness meter at all
Streaming platforms normalise playback so listeners do not have to ride the volume knob between songs. In practice they aim at roughly -14 LUFS integrated: Spotify and YouTube normalise around -14, Apple Music around -16, Tidal around -14, and Amazon Music similar. Master far louder than that and the platform simply attenuates your track on playback, so all your crushing bought you is lost dynamics and distortion, not competitive loudness. A loudness meter shows you three numbers that matter: integrated LUFS (the whole-song average that platforms normalise to), short-term LUFS (a 3-second window, useful for checking a chorus), and true peak in dBTP (the real peak after digital-to-analogue reconstruction, which you keep at or below -1.0 dBTP). The numbers to actually hit
Understand why the targets exist and you will stop chasing loudness for its own sake:
- Streaming (pop, hip-hop, electronic): aim for about -9 to -11 LUFS integrated if you want density, knowing it will be normalised down, or master to -14 LUFS to preserve full dynamics with no penalty. There is no loudness reward above the normalisation target; there is only a dynamics cost.
- Streaming (acoustic, jazz, classical, folk): -14 to -16 LUFS integrated keeps the dynamic range that makes these genres breathe.
- True peak ceiling: -1.0 dBTP for streaming, and a more conservative -1.5 to -2.0 dBTP if the track is heavily limited or will be encoded to low-bitrate MP3, because lossy codecs overshoot.
- Loudness range (LRA): roughly 4-8 LU for dense modern pop, higher for dynamic genres. A very low LRA (under 3) usually means you over-limited.
- YouTube: normalises to about -14 LUFS, so there is no benefit to mastering a music video louder than that.

Set the meter as the last plugin in your master chain (post-limiter) so it reads what actually leaves your session. Play the entire song, not a loop, to get a true integrated reading, since a single loud chorus will mislead you. Watch the short-term value during the loudest and quietest sections to confirm the whole song holds together, and glance at true peak to make sure your limiter ceiling is doing its job.
