What compression actually does to a drum hit

A drum hit has two parts: the transient (the initial attack — the click of the beater, the crack of the stick) and the sustain (the body, ring and room tail that follow). A compressor turns down anything louder than the threshold by an amount set by the ratio. The magic on drums is in the timing controls, because they decide which part of the hit gets turned down.

  • Attack — how quickly the compressor reacts once a hit crosses the threshold. A slow attack (around 10–30 ms) lets the transient punch through before compression clamps down, so the drums sound snappier. Parallel (or “New York”) compression is how engineers get drums to sound huge without killing the dynamics. Instead of crushing the main signal, you compress a duplicate hard and blend it underneath the clean drums.

  1. Send your drums to an aux/bus and put a compressor on it.
