- Balance first. Before you reach for a single plugin, get the raw fader levels right. Most amateur mixes are really just balance problems. Set the loudest element (often the lead vocal or the kick and snare) and build around it.
- Carve space with EQ. Two sounds fighting in the same frequency range turn to mud. A common example: a kick and a bass both live around 50–100 Hz, so you make room by gently dipping one where the other is strongest. Panning does the same job in the stereo field.
- Control dynamics with compression. A vocal that jumps from too quiet to too loud can be evened out with a compressor. Gentle ratios of around 2:1 to 4:1 are typical starting points for vocals — adjust by ear until the performance sits steadily without sounding squashed.

Mastering is a lighter touch by comparison, and that surprises people. You are not fixing the mix at this stage — you are refining an already-good mix. If a vocal is buried or a kick is missing, you go back to the mix; mastering cannot un-bake those problems from a stereo file.
A typical mastering chain, in order, might look like this:
- Corrective EQ — small, broad moves (often a decibel or two) to fix overall tonal tilt, such as taming harsh upper mids or adding a touch of air up top.
- Compression or glue — gentle, usually a low ratio and very little gain reduction, to tighten the whole song together rather than to reshape it.
- Saturation or subtle harmonic enhancement — optional, to add warmth or perceived loudness without pushing levels.
- Limiting — the last plugin in the chain, which raises the overall loudness to a target and stops peaks from clipping.
- Metering and format prep — checking loudness and setting the final file up for its destination.
