How to Mix a Full Band

Learning how to mix a full band comes down to one idea: build the song from the most important element outward, one track at a time, in a fixed order so nothing fights for the same space. You start with rough levels, carve out room for each instrument with EQ, glue things with compression, then add depth with effects — and you check your decisions against a reference the whole way through.

A full band mix — drums, bass, guitars, keys, vocals — has a lot of overlapping frequencies, so the real skill isn’t making any single track sound huge. It’s making everything fit together. Below is a repeatable workflow you can use on almost any rock, pop or singer-songwriter arrangement.

Prep your session before you touch a fader

Good mixes start with a tidy session. Before you do anything creative, get organised so you’re not fighting your own project halfway through.

  • Label and colour every track — kick, snare, overheads, bass DI, guitar L, guitar R, lead vocal, and so on. You’ll move faster when you can find things instantly.
  • Group into buses. Route all drum tracks to a Drums bus, backing vocals to a BGV bus, guitars to a Guitars bus. This lets you control whole sections with one fader later.

  • Clean up. Trim silence, fade edits so there are no clicks, and remove obvious noises (chair squeaks, count-ins) before they distract you mid-mix.

Ten minutes of prep saves an hour of frustration later, and it keeps your ears fresh for the parts that actually need judgement.

How to mix a full band: get the static balance first

Before any plugins, mix the whole song with faders alone. This is called the static balance, and it’s the single most important stage — if the song sounds good with just volume, everything after it is polish.

Pull all faders down, then bring elements up in order of importance. For most band material that order is:

  1. Kick and snare — the rhythmic backbone. Set these first so they sit solidly without dominating.
  2. Bass — balance it against the kick. These two share low-end real estate, so getting their relationship right early prevents a muddy foundation.
  3. Rest of the drum kit — overheads, toms, hats, room mics.
  4. Rhythm guitars and keys — the harmonic bed the song lives on.
  5. Lead vocal — the thing listeners follow. It should feel present and clear on top of everything else.
  6. Everything else — lead lines, backing vocals, ear candy.

Work at a moderate, consistent volume and keep asking one question: can I hear the lead vocal and the groove clearly? If the answer is yes with faders alone, you’ve done 70% of the mix. Don’t rush this — spend real time here and every later decision gets easier.

Carve space with EQ so nothing masks each other

In a dense band arrangement, two instruments in the same frequency range will mask one another no matter how loud you push them. EQ’s main job here is subtractive — making room — not making things “bigger”. Stock EQ in any DAW is more than enough for this.

These are starting points to tune by ear, not fixed rules:

  • High-pass filter aggressively. Roll off lows on anything that isn’t kick or bass. Guitars, vocals and keys rarely need much below ~80–120 Hz, and clearing that space instantly tightens the low end.
  • Kick and bass: the kick’s fundamental usually lives around 50–100 Hz with beater click up near 2–4 kHz; bass fundamentals sit in a similar low range with definition around 700 Hz–2 kHz. If they clash, boost the kick where you cut the bass, or vice versa, so each owns a slice.
  • Vocals: a gentle cut around 200–400 Hz reduces boxiness; a lift around 3–5 kHz adds presence; a shelf above ~10 kHz adds air. Small moves — a couple of dB — go a long way.
  • Guitars: tame harshness around 2–4 kHz if needed, and cut some low-mid mud (~200–500 Hz) so they don’t crowd the vocal.

Cut narrow to fix problems, boost wide to shape tone, and always compare against bypass so you’re improving things, not just changing them. Use compression to control dynamics and glue the mix

Compression evens out the loud and quiet moments so parts stay present in the mix. As with EQ, stock compressors handle the vast majority of band mixing.

Reasonable starting points, adjusted by ear to the source:

  • Lead vocal: ratio around 2:1–4:1, medium attack, medium-fast release, aiming for roughly 3–6 dB of gain reduction on the loudest phrases. This keeps the vocal sitting consistently on top.
  • Snare and kick: faster settings to add punch; watch the attack so you don’t kill the transient that gives the drum its snap.
  • Bass: a moderate ratio with a few dB of reduction steadies the low end so notes don’t jump out.
  • Drum bus: light bus compression (1.5:1–2:1, only 1–3 dB) can glue the kit together and make it feel like one instrument.

Set the threshold so the meter only moves on the loudest hits at first, then taste from there. If a track sounds squashed or lifeless, you’re overdoing it — back off. Build depth and width with panning and effects

A static, mono-feeling band mix sounds small. Panning and time-based effects create a sense of a real space with players positioned across it.

Panning: keep the anchors — kick, snare, bass and lead vocal — centred so the song has a strong core. Spread everything else out: pan double-tracked rhythm guitars hard left and right, place overheads and keys off-centre, and set backing vocals opposite each other. Width comes from contrast, so resist centring everything.

Reverb and delay: a couple of shared reverbs on aux/send buses (one short room, one longer plate or hall) placed on multiple tracks makes the band sound like it’s playing in the same space. Send the vocal and snare to the same reverb and they instantly feel connected. Delay can push a vocal back or add rhythmic interest without the wash of reverb. Reference, check translation, and finish the mix

Your ears adapt as you work, so you need external checkpoints. Load two or three professionally mixed songs in a similar style into your session and A/B against them at matched loudness. Notice how their low end, vocal level and brightness compare to yours, and adjust.

Then check translation — how the mix holds up outside your monitors:

  • Listen on headphones, laptop speakers and in your car or on your phone.
  • Check the mix in mono — if instruments vanish or the low end collapses, you have phase or panning issues to fix.
  • Take short breaks. Fresh ears catch problems tired ears miss.

Leave headroom on your master bus — aim for peaks around -6 to -3 dBFS and no clipping — so the mastering stage has room to work. Mixing and mastering are separate jobs: mixing balances the parts, mastering finalises the whole. What order should I mix the instruments in?

Start with the rhythmic core — kick and snare — then bass, then the rest of the drums, then harmonic instruments like rhythm guitars and keys, and bring the lead vocal in near the top so everything supports it. Some engineers build the whole mix around the vocal from the start instead. Both work; the key is having a consistent order so you always know each part’s job relative to what came before.

Why does my full band mix sound muddy?

Mud usually means too much energy in the low-mids (roughly 200–500 Hz) from many instruments stacking up, or a kick and bass fighting for the same low frequencies.
