How to Master a Song for Vinyl

To master for vinyl, you prepare a dynamic, clean, headroom-rich version of your song that a lacquer-cutting engineer can transfer to a groove without the stylus mistracking. That means taming harsh sibilance, keeping the low end mono and controlled, avoiding the brick-wall loudness of a streaming master, and delivering a flat high-resolution file — not one you have EQ’d to imitate a record.

Vinyl is a physical format. A needle rides a groove, and there are real mechanical limits to what that groove can hold. Understanding those limits is the whole job. Get them right and your record sounds warm, open and loud enough; ignore them and you get distortion, skipping, and a pressing plant sending your files back.

Why a vinyl master is different from a digital master

A streaming or CD master lives entirely in the digital domain, where the main constraints are loudness normalisation and the 0 dBFS ceiling. Vinyl adds physics. The cutting stylus can only move so fast and so far, the playback needle has to stay seated in the groove, and the medium loses high-frequency detail as it spirals toward the centre of the disc. The single biggest mindset shift: loudness is not the goal. On streaming platforms, everyone chases a competitive level and normalisation pulls it back anyway. On vinyl, excessive level and heavy limiting actively hurt you — they shorten the playable time per side and force the cutting engineer to reduce your level anyway. Give the medium room to breathe and it rewards you.

Keep your dynamics — loudness is not the target

Resist the urge to slam your master into a brick-wall limiter. Where a streaming master might land somewhere around −14 LUFS integrated as a common reference point (see our LUFS explainer for why that number is only a rough guide), a vinyl master benefits from noticeably more dynamic range and lower average level. There is no fixed LUFS target for vinyl — the cutting engineer sets the actual disc level — so your job is to deliver something musical and uncrushed rather than hit a number.

Leave real peak headroom. A safe starting point is to keep true peaks around −1 to −3 dBTP and to back off any limiter until the meters are barely moving. If your song already exists as a loud digital master, do not just hand that over — pull the limiter back or bypass it and let the dynamics return. Tame the low end and keep bass in mono

Bass is where vinyl records live or die. Loud, wide, out-of-phase low frequencies make the cutting stylus swing vertically, which is exactly the movement that pushes a playback needle out of the groove. The fix is to keep everything below roughly 100–150 Hz in mono. That does not mean your whole mix collapses to mono — only the deep low end.

Most DAWs include a stock utility or stereo-imaging plugin with a “mono below” or “bass mono” control; set the crossover somewhere in the 100–150 Hz region by ear and listen for the kick and bass tightening up in the centre. Check your correlation meter too: if the low-frequency phase reads negative, fix it before anything else.

Control sibilance and harsh highs before they distort

The second enemy is high-frequency energy, especially sibilance — those “s” and “t” sounds that concentrate energy up around 5–10 kHz. Vinyl struggles to hold sharp, sustained treble. Loud sibilance can literally burn or distort in the groove, and it gets worse toward the centre of the side where high-frequency resolution drops.

Master with a de-esser or a dynamic EQ node that gently clamps down on peaks in the roughly 5–10 kHz range. Aim to catch only the loudest spikes — a couple of dB of gain reduction on the harshest esses, not constant dulling of the whole track. The same treatment used when you mix vocals applies here, just at the master level and slightly more conservatively. If a cymbal-heavy or very bright mix sounds fatiguing on headphones, it will sound worse on a needle. A little restraint in the top octave now saves a lot of distortion later.

Build the mastering chain in the right order

Chain order matters. A sensible vinyl mastering signal path, adjusted by ear for each song, looks roughly like this:

  • Corrective EQ first — clean up any tonal problems and roll off inaudible sub rumble below about 20–30 Hz with a gentle high-pass. That subsonic energy wastes groove space and makes the stylus work for nothing.
  • Bass mono / elliptical stage — collapse the low end to mono around 100–150 Hz as above.
  • Gentle compression — light glue only, a ratio around 1.5:1 to 2:1 with just a dB or two of gain reduction if the song needs cohesion. The fundamentals of this are covered in our EQ and compression guide.
  • De-essing / dynamic high control — tame the 5–10 kHz spikes.
  • Tonal EQ — final broad-stroke shaping for balance.
  • Peak control, not maximisation — a limiter set only to catch stray peaks and hold true peaks near −1 to −3 dBTP, never to raise loudness.

Treat every number here as a starting point you adjust while listening, not a rule. Some engineers put de-essing before compression; some skip the bus compressor entirely. Let the song tell you.

Deliver a flat, high-resolution file — no RIAA, no dither to 16-bit

This trips up a lot of first-timers. Do not apply the RIAA equalisation curve yourself — that pre-emphasis and playback correction is baked into the cutting and playback process, and the cutting engineer’s gear handles it. Your file should be flat and unmastered-for-RIAA.

Deliver the highest quality you have: 24-bit, at your project’s sample rate (44.1 kHz is fine; 48 kHz or higher is welcome). Do not dither down to 16-bit and do not convert to a lossy format — give the engineer the full-resolution WAV or AIFF. If your song has quiet intros or outros, keep the fades clean. And unless the plant asks otherwise, send the album as individual song files with clear track markers rather than one glued-together file.

How to master for vinyl: sequencing and side length

Because high-frequency detail and available groove space decrease toward the centre of a side, sequencing affects sound quality. When you master for vinyl, put your brightest, most dynamic, most bass-heavy songs near the start of a side and your gentler, mellower tracks toward the inner grooves where the medium is least forgiving.

Side length is the other lever. The more minutes you cram onto a side, the narrower the grooves and the lower the achievable level and bass. As a rough guide, a 12-inch 33 rpm side sounds best at around 18 minutes or less, and cutting louder or with more bass means shorter still. If your record is long, consider spreading it across more sides. Your pressing plant or cutting engineer will tell you their limits — ask early.

When an online mastering service makes sense
