How to Mix Vocals in FL Studio

Route your vocal to a Mixer insert track

Everything starts in the Mixer, which you open by pressing F9. A vocal that lives only in the Playlist as an audio clip has no processing home yet, so give it one. Select the audio clip’s channel in the Channel Rack, then look at the bottom of the channel’s settings for the Track selector (the small number box) and set it to a free insert — Insert 1 is fine. Now click that insert in the Mixer and rename it “Vocal” by pressing F2, so you never lose track of it.

If the vocal sounds squashed or lifeless, you are compressing too hard — back off the threshold. Tame the harsh “S” sounds with de-essing

Compression tends to push sibilance — the sharp “sss” and “sh” sounds — forward, and it gets fatiguing fast. FL Studio has no plugin literally called “de-esser,” but you have two excellent stock options. The classic choice is Maximus: it has a built-in de-essing preset that isolates the high band and compresses only the sibilant frequencies. Load Maximus, pick the De-essing preset, and adjust to taste.

Alternatively, Fruity Multiband Compressor lets you solo the high band (roughly 5–8 kHz), compress it hard, and leave the rest untouched — same result with more manual control. Never put reverb directly on the vocal insert — route it to a send instead, so you can share one reverb across multiple tracks and blend it cleanly. In the Mixer, click an empty insert to use as your reverb bus, then on your Vocal insert right-click the send arrow at the bottom pointing to that bus to enable it. Add Fruity Reverb 2 to the send, choose a room or plate size that fits the song, and roll off the reverb’s low and high extremes so it sits behind the vocal rather than washing over it.

Do the same with Fruity Delay 3 on a second send for echoes and depth — a tempo-synced eighth or quarter-note delay adds width without clutter.
