How to Record Clean Electric Guitar at Home

To record clean electric guitar that stays crisp and defined instead of dull and lifeless, you have to respect two things: clean tones expose every flaw (string noise, hum, sloppy picking, a bad room), and they need headroom because clean signals are full of sharp transients from the pick attack. This guide covers the two ways to capture the sound, exactly where to put the mic, how to stage your gain so nothing clips, and how a DI track plus an amp sim gives you unlimited tonal do-overs after the take.

Two paths: miked amp or direct with an amp sim

You have two legitimate ways to record clean electric guitar at home, and the smartest approach captures both at once.

  • Miked amp: the classic sound. A real clean amp (think Fender-style blackface territory) moving air in a room, captured with a microphone. It has feel and dimension a plugin works hard to imitate.
  • Direct + amp sim: plug the guitar into a DI or your interface’s instrument (Hi-Z) input, record the dry signal, and shape the tone in software. Quiet, neighbor-friendly, and endlessly editable.

Whenever possible, record a DI track in parallel with your miked amp. Even if you love the amp sound, that clean DI is insurance: if the tone doesn’t fit the mix later, you can reamp it (send it back out to a real amp) or run it through a plugin without asking the player to perform again.

Mic placement to record clean electric guitar from an amp

The single most important tone control you own is not a knob, it’s the position of the microphone on the speaker.

  • Mic choice: a dynamic like the SM57 is the standard workhorse; a ribbon mic gives a smoother, less brittle top end that flatters bright clean tones. A condenser adds air but also captures more room, so only use one if your room sounds good.
  • Distance: start with the capsule 2-5 cm (about 1-2 inches) off the grille cloth. Close-miking rejects the room and gives a focused, direct sound.
  • Position across the cone: aimed at the center of the dust cap is brightest and most aggressive; moving toward the outer edge of the cone gets progressively warmer and rounder. For clean tones, just off-center is usually the sweet spot: clarity without ice-pick treble.
  • Angle: straight-on (on-axis) is brightest; tilting the mic 15-45 degrees off-axis tames harshness while keeping definition.

Move the mic in small increments and listen; a couple of centimetres changes the tone more than most EQ moves ever will.

Gain staging and headroom for clean tones

Clean signals clip more easily than distorted ones because their transients are so sharp, so gain staging matters. Set your interface preamp (for a miked amp) or your Hi-Z input (for a DI) so the guitar peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS on the loudest strums. Play the hardest part of the song when you set the level, not a gentle noodle, or the first big chord will clip.

Guitar pickups, especially single coils, pick up hum. Reduce it at the source: face away from computer monitors and power supplies, and rotate your body until the buzz drops. A humbucker or a noise-gate plugin helps, but nothing beats moving the player. Keep your buffer size low (64-128 samples) while tracking so the guitarist isn’t fighting monitoring latency, which wrecks timing on clean parts where every note is exposed.

Reamping and amp sims after the take

Once you have a clean DI recorded, the tonal world opens up. Modern amp-sim plugins get startlingly close to a miked amp, and because you’re feeding them a pristine clean signal, they behave predictably.   • Add a touch of compression (2-3 dB reduction) to even out pick dynamics, then a light chorus or plate reverb for dimension.

Finishing the clean tone in the mix

In the mix, a clean electric usually needs a high-pass filter around 80-100 Hz to clear space for bass and kick, and a gentle dip around 200-400 Hz if it sounds boxy. If two clean guitars play similar parts, pan them hard left and right and give each a slightly different tone or cabinet so they don’t fight. A short slapback delay or a plate reverb pushes the part back just enough to sit under a vocal.
