Recording a direct signal, or DI, means plugging your electric guitar straight into your interface and capturing the clean, unprocessed sound of the pickups before any amp or effects. What you need to record DI guitar
The key requirement is a proper instrument-level (Hi-Z) input. A passive electric guitar has a high-impedance output that does not match a standard mic or line input; plugging into the wrong input gives a thin, weak, dull sound. Almost every modern audio interface has a switchable Hi-Z input, usually the first channel with an instrument or guitar icon, so engage that before you do anything else. If your interface lacks one, a standalone DI box converts the signal correctly.
Set your gain so the loudest strums and palm-hit chugs peak around -12 to -6 dBFS. Guitars have sharp transients, so leave that headroom and never approach 0 dBFS, where the clean DI clips and ruins the take. A clipped DI cannot be fixed by any amp sim afterward. Because you monitor through software amp plugins in real time, latency matters: set your buffer to 64 or 128 samples while tracking so the delay stays under about 6 ms and the guitar feels responsive under your fingers. Raise it to 512 or 1024 later for mixing.
Change your strings if they are old, and check your intonation and tuning. The DI captures the guitar exactly, so a dull or slightly out-of-tune instrument will sound dull and out of tune no matter what plugin you add.
Recording a clean, usable DI take
The whole point of a DI is a pristine capture, so play cleanly and consistently. Track to a click for tight timing, and if you are recording rhythm parts for a heavy track, record two separate performances to pan hard left and right for width, rather than copying one take. Doubling is where DI guitar earns its keep, because each pass is a genuine performance rather than a duplicate.
- Mute cleanly. DI reveals every open string ring and fret buzz. Palm-mute where the part calls for it and rest your fretting hand to silence unused strings.
- Watch pick attack consistency. Because there is no amp compression at the source, uneven picking shows up starkly. Aim for even dynamics; you can add compression later.
- Keep the same volume knob setting. Rolling the guitar volume changes the tone and level feeding your amp sim, so leave it consistent unless a part deliberately calls for a change.
Record the dry DI on its own track and, if your interface and DAW allow, monitor through the amp sim on a separate return so the recorded file stays clean. That clean file is your reampable master.
Take a moment to check the recorded DI waveform before you move on. It should look healthy and full without ever squaring off at the top, which would mean it clipped somewhere in the chain. If you hear any crackle or fizz on the raw DI itself, that is a signal-path problem to fix now, not later, because every amp sim you add will only amplify it. It is also worth recording a short count-in and leaving a couple of seconds of silence at the head of each take, which makes editing, aligning doubles and setting up noise gates far easier down the line.
Reamping with amp-sim plugins
Once the DI is captured, you shape the tone entirely in the box, which is the reason DI recording is so powerful. Modern amp-sim plugins model amps, cabinets and pedals convincingly, and because your DI is dry you can audition dozens of rigs against the same performance. A few tips make the sim sound like a real rig rather than a fizzy preset. Do not stack more gain than you need, because excess gain turns tight chugs into mush. Use a cabinet impulse response that suits the part, and roll off the extreme highs above roughly 8 to 10 kHz to remove digital fizz. For heavy rhythm, a subtle boost pedal in front of the amp tightens the low end just as it does with hardware.
Fitting DI guitar into the mix
Even a great tone needs to sit in a track. High-pass your guitars around 80 to 100 Hz to clear space for bass and kick, and pan your double-tracked rhythms hard left and right for a wide, powerful wall.
