How to Record a Song With One Microphone

You do not need a rack of gear to make a real song. If you learn how to record with one microphone, a single decent large-diaphragm condenser and an audio interface will carry vocals, acoustic guitar, and even a whole live take. The catch is that every decision – where you point the mic, how loud you sing, and what the room does to the sound – matters more when there is nothing else to hide behind. This guide walks through the placement, levels, and workflow that let one mic do the work of a small studio.

Choosing and positioning your one microphone

For a do-it-all setup, a large-diaphragm cardioid condenser (think Audio-Technica AT2020, Rode NT1, or an sE X1) is the most flexible choice. Cardioid means it rejects sound arriving from the rear, so it favors the source in front of it and pushes the room slightly into the background – exactly what you want in an untreated space.

Placement changes everything:

  • Vocals: Set the mic 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) from your mouth with a pop filter about 8-10 cm in front of the capsule. Sing slightly across the mic rather than straight into it to soften plosives. Move closer (10 cm) for an intimate, bass-heavy tone; back off to 25 cm for a more natural, balanced sound.
  • Acoustic guitar: Aim the mic where the neck meets the body (around the 12th-14th fret), roughly 20-30 cm away and angled about 45 degrees toward the soundhole. Pointing straight at the soundhole gives a boomy, low-end-heavy result – avoid it.
  • A whole performance at once: If you are singing and playing together, place the mic about 40 cm out at chest height, angled up toward your mouth so it splits the difference between voice and guitar. Balance the two by leaning in or out as you play.

Gain staging: the make-or-break step when you record with one microphone

With a single mic, a bad level ruins the take because there is no second source to lean on. Set your interface gain so the loudest part of your performance peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS in your DAW. That leaves comfortable headroom and keeps you far from 0 dBFS, where digital clipping produces harsh, unfixable distortion.

Do a proper soundcheck: perform your loudest line at full energy and watch the meters. If the peaks kiss -3 dBFS, turn the gain down. Recording a little conservatively is always safer than pushing hot – modern 24-bit converters have so much dynamic range that a quiet-but-clean take is trivial to bring up later, while a clipped one is garbage.

Engage the interface’s pad or high-pass filter if the mic distorts on loud sources, and keep phantom power (+48V) on for condensers.

Taming the room and the latency

One mic in a reflective room picks up every hard surface. You do not need a treated studio, but a few quick moves help enormously: record facing into a corner with a duvet or thick blanket hung behind the mic, throw a rug on the floor, and keep the mic away from bare walls. To monitor comfortably, set a low buffer size (64 or 128 samples) while tracking so you hear yourself with minimal delay, then raise it to 512 or 1024 for mixing. Building a full song from a single source

Here is the workflow that turns one mic into a finished track:

  • Track in passes. Record the acoustic guitar first as a clean bed, then reposition the mic for vocals and lay them over the top. Because you are re-using the same mic, keep placement consistent between takes of the same part so overdubs match.
  • Comp your takes. Record three or four full vocal passes and stitch the best phrases together. One mic plus patience beats one perfect take you will never nail.
  • Add harmonies and doubles. Sing the same part twice and pan the copies slightly left and right for width – an easy way to make a solo voice sound produced.
  • Capture percussion cheaply. The same condenser records a shaker, hand claps, or a tapped guitar body. Move it 30-40 cm back so transients do not spike your levels.

When you mix, a high-pass filter around 80-100 Hz on the vocal removes rumble, gentle compression evens out the dynamics, and a touch of reverb glues everything into one space. Because a single mic gives you a consistent, coherent tone across every layer, your mixes often sit together more naturally than multi-mic beginner recordings.
