If the reference is brighter, a gentle high-shelf lift of a couple of dB above 8–10 kHz on your mix bus — or better, on the specific dull elements — often closes the gap; if it’s smoother, you may have a harsh resonance around 2–5 kHz to tame. If their low end is tighter, high-pass the elements that don’t need sub, and check whether your kick and bass are fighting in the same octave. If their vocal is more upfront, ride the level up a decibel and add presence rather than just cranking the fader.
Resist the urge to copy the reference exactly. It’s a target for balance and tone, not a template you clone. Close behind is picking the wrong reference: a sparse acoustic ballad tells you nothing useful about your dense electronic track, and a heavily limited modern master sets an unrealistic dynamics target for an unmastered mix.
