That sub is what you feel on a big system, but most listeners never hear it — laptop speakers, earbuds and phone speakers roll off hard below roughly 150–200 Hz. If all your energy sits in the sub, the 808 disappears the moment someone hits play on their phone. Tune the 808 to the key before anything else

When two sub-heavy sounds hit at once they can phase-cancel and actually get quieter. The fix is sidechain compression: put a compressor on the 808 and trigger it from the kick so the 808 ducks a hair every time the kick lands. Start gentle — a ratio around 2:1 to 4:1, a fast attack, and a release timed to the tempo so the 808 recovers before the next hit. You only need a couple of dB of movement; you’re making space, not pumping. On tracks where the kick and 808 rarely land together, you can instead carve a narrow EQ dip in the 808 at the kick’s fundamental. Either way, decide which element owns the sub — usually the 808 in modern hip-hop and trap — and let the other one sit just above or below it.
Control dynamics and glue the transient
Long 808 notes often have an uneven level: the attack punches, then the tail sags. A little compression evens that out so every note carries the same weight.
