Every sound is a stack of frequencies, from deep sub-bass at the bottom to airy highs at the top. An equaliser splits that range into bands and lets you raise or lower the level of each one. Pull down the low frequencies on an acoustic guitar and it stops competing with the kick and bass; lift the highs on a vocal and it feels more present and detailed.
The audible spectrum runs roughly from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. It helps to think of it in broad zones: sub-bass (20–60 Hz) that you feel more than hear, bass (60–250 Hz) that gives weight, low-mids (250–500 Hz) where mud and boxiness live, mids (500 Hz–2 kHz) that carry the body and attack of most instruments, presence (2–6 kHz) that controls clarity and bite, and highs (6–20 kHz) that add air and sparkle. You don’t need to memorise exact numbers — you need to know which direction to reach when something sounds wrong.

Here is a reliable order of operations. Do it while the track plays in the context of the full mix, not soloed — an instrument only has to sound good next to everything else, not on its own.
1. High-pass first. On almost every non-bass track, sweep a high-pass filter up from the bottom until the sound starts to thin, then back off slightly. This clears sub-rumble, mic handling noise and low-end build-up that you can’t always hear but which eats headroom. Vocals often high-pass around 80–120 Hz, overheads higher still.
2. Find and cut the problems. This is subtractive EQ, and it’s where most of the real work happens. Take a bell band, boost it hard (say +10 dB) with a moderately narrow Q, and sweep it slowly across the mids. Offensive resonances — boxiness around 300–500 Hz, honk around 800 Hz, harshness around 3 kHz — will jump out and sound ugly. When you find one, pull the gain down a few dB instead. You’ve now removed a problem rather than masking it.
3. Shape the tone. Only after cleaning up should you add. A gentle high shelf can bring air to a vocal; a broad low-mid dip can de-mud a busy guitar; a small presence boost can help a snare cut through. Keep boosts wide and modest — big narrow boosts almost always sound unnatural.
4. Check in context and against reference. Bypass the EQ regularly to make sure you’re improving things, and level-match so a louder version doesn’t just seem better. Reference a professional track in the same genre to keep your tonal balance honest.
Subtractive vs additive EQ, and why cutting wins
Two philosophies get talked about constantly. Subtractive EQ means removing unwanted frequencies; additive EQ means boosting wanted ones. Both are valid, but beginners lean far too hard on boosting, which quickly makes a mix loud, brittle and fatiguing.
Cutting is usually the smarter first move because most mix problems are about too much of something — too much mud, too much boxiness, too many instruments fighting over the same 200–400 Hz region. Carve space by cutting, and every element gets room to breathe. A classic trick when two sounds clash — say a vocal and a lead synth — is complementary EQ: cut a little where one instrument’s key frequencies live on the other track, so each owns its own pocket of the spectrum. Boosts still have their place for adding character and excitement, but reach for a cut first and your mixes will thank you.

- EQ’ing in solo. A track can sound great alone and vanish in the mix. Judge it in context.
- Boosting to fix, instead of cutting the cause. If a vocal sounds dull, a dip in the muddy low-mids often beats a big high boost.
- Huge narrow boosts. Wide and small sounds natural; narrow and large sounds like a resonance. Narrow Q is for cutting problems, not for boosting tone.
