Learning how to use reverb well is one of the biggest jumps a bedroom producer can make. Reverb is the effect that recreates the sound of a space — the reflections a room, hall or plate adds after the original sound. Used carefully it glues a mix together, adds depth, and makes a dry, close-mic’d recording feel like it was performed somewhere real. Used badly it turns everything into a distant, washy mess.

What reverb does to a sound
When a sound is made in a real room, you hear it twice: the direct sound that travels straight to your ears, and a cloud of reflections bouncing off the walls, floor and ceiling a fraction of a second later. Those reflections arrive from every direction, overlap, and slowly die away. Your brain reads all of that as “size” and “distance.” A tiled bathroom sounds tight and bright; a cathedral sounds vast and long.
A reverb plugin simulates that behaviour. It takes your dry signal and generates the reflections for you, so you can put a source into a convincing space without actually recording in one. That is powerful because most home recordings are made in small, treated (or untreated) rooms with a mic close to the source — clean and dry, but flat and lifeless. Reverb gives you the depth back, and unlike a real room, you control exactly how much.
The main reverb types and when to reach for each
Most reverb plugins offer several algorithms or modes. You don’t need all of them, but knowing what each is for saves a lot of guessing.
- Room — short, natural reflections that suggest a small-to-medium space. Great for making drums, guitars or vocals sound like they belong together without obvious “effect.”
- Hall — long, lush and smooth, modelled on concert halls. Beautiful on strings, pads, ballad vocals and anything you want to feel grand. It eats space quickly, so use it sparingly in busy mixes.
- Plate — a classic studio sound made originally by vibrating a large metal sheet. Bright, dense and flattering, plate is the go-to for vocals and snares in pop, rock and soul.
- Spring — the boingy, slightly metallic reverb built into guitar amps. Characterful on electric guitar, dub and surf, less useful as a general-purpose tool.
- Chamber — a middle ground between room and hall: rich but controlled, historically made by playing sound into a reflective room and re-recording it.
A useful default: reach for a plate or a short hall on lead vocals, a room on the drum bus, and a longer hall or chamber on pads and background parts. Convolution reverbs, which use recorded “impulses” of real spaces, are a separate family worth exploring once you’re comfortable — they trade tweakability for realism.
Reverb controls explained: how to use reverb’s key parameters
Once you know how to use reverb types, the controls are what separate a pro result from a beginner one. A few parameters do most of the work:
- Decay (or reverb time / RT60) — how long the tail takes to fade out. Short decays (0.4–1.2 seconds) keep things tight; long decays (2 seconds and up) create obvious, ambient washes. Match decay to tempo: a fast, busy song needs shorter tails or the reverb smears everything.
- Pre-delay — the gap between the dry sound and the start of the reverb, in milliseconds. This is the secret weapon. A pre-delay of 20–60 ms lets the attack of the vocal or snare punch through dry before the tail arrives, keeping the source clear and up-front even with a big reverb behind it.
- Size — scales the modelled space. Bigger sizes mean longer, more spread-out reflections; smaller sizes feel intimate.
- Mix / wet-dry — the balance of processed to unprocessed signal. On a send (more on that below) you set this to 100% wet. On an insert you dial it in to taste, often 10–30%.
- Damping / high-cut — controls how quickly high frequencies fade in the tail, mimicking how soft rooms absorb treble. Turning it down makes reverb darker and less harsh.
The single most useful trick: EQ the reverb return. Roll off the lows below roughly 200–300 Hz so the tail doesn’t muddy your low end, and gently tame the highs above 8–10 kHz so it doesn’t hiss or compete with the vocal’s air. A reverb that sits behind the mix instead of on top of it is almost always EQ’d this way.
Send vs insert: how to route reverb the right way
There are two ways to apply reverb, and choosing correctly is half the battle.
Insert means the reverb sits directly on a single track, processing that one signal with a wet-dry mix. It’s quick and fine for a one-off effect, but it’s inefficient and gives you no shared space.
Send/return (aux) routing is the professional default. You create one reverb on an auxiliary channel set to 100% wet, then “send” a bit of each track to it. Now your vocal, snare and guitars can all share the same room, which glues them together, and you control each track’s depth just by adjusting its send level. You can also EQ and compress that one return once instead of on every track. If you learn one workflow habit from this guide, make it this: build a couple of reverb sends (say a short plate and a long hall) and route everything into them.
A related move is to duck the reverb with a compressor keyed off the dry vocal, so the tail drops out of the way while the singer is phrasing and swells up in the gaps. That keeps lyrics intelligible while still giving you a generous space.
Common reverb mistakes beginners make
Most reverb problems come down to a handful of habits:
- Too much, too wet. Reverb sounds great soloed and terrible in the mix when overdone. Set levels in the full mix, not in solo, and pull it back until you notice it’s missing rather than pushing until you notice it’s there.
- No pre-delay and no EQ. A raw reverb with full-range tail buries the source and clouds the low mids. Add pre-delay and high-pass the return.
- One long reverb on everything. A single big hall on every track turns the mix to soup. Use shorter reverbs on rhythmic elements and save the long tails for sustained parts.
- Reverb on low-frequency sources. Kick and bass almost never want reverb — it robs them of punch and definition. Keep the low end dry.
- Ignoring mono compatibility. Check the mix in mono; some wide reverbs collapse or thin out badly, which matters for club and phone playback.
If a mix feels distant and washy, the fix is nearly always less decay, more pre-delay, and a high-pass filter on the return — not a different plugin.

Less than you think. Start with a plate on a send, add pre-delay of around 30–60 ms so the words stay clear, high-pass the return below 250 Hz, and raise the send until the vocal sits in a space — then back it off slightly. In a dense pop mix the reverb should be felt more than heard; in a sparse ballad you can be far more generous.
Should reverb go before or after compression?
On a vocal chain, compress the dry vocal first for consistent level, then send that controlled signal to the reverb. Because pro reverb usually lives on a send/return rather than an insert, this happens naturally — the compressor is on the track, the reverb is on the aux. If you must use reverb as an insert, put it after your main compressor so you’re not compressing the tail.
