How to Use a Limiter

Knowing how to use a limiter comes down to one idea: you set a hard output ceiling that the signal can never cross, then push level into it until the track is as loud as you want without clipping. A limiter is really just an extreme, fast compressor with a very high ratio, sitting at the end of a chain to catch peaks and lift perceived loudness. Used gently it protects your mix; pushed too hard it flattens the life out of it.

What a limiter does and why you need one

A limiter puts an absolute cap on your signal’s peak level. Feed it audio and set the ceiling to, say, -1 dB, and nothing on the output will ever poke above -1 dB — the plugin clamps down instantly on anything that tries. Because it stops peaks dead, you can then raise the overall level underneath them, so the average (perceived) loudness climbs while the loudest transients stay safely under your ceiling.

That solves two problems at once. First, it prevents digital clipping — the harsh distortion you get when a signal exceeds 0 dBFS. Second, it lets a mix compete on loudness with commercial releases without you having to ride every peak by hand. A modern “brickwall” limiter uses look-ahead (it peeks a few milliseconds into the future) so it can catch a transient before it happens rather than reacting late, which keeps the sound clean.

Think of a compressor as turning down loud parts gradually and a limiter as slamming a lid down the instant the signal reaches the top. Both reduce dynamic range; the limiter just does it faster and more absolutely.

Where the limiter goes in your chain

The most common home for a limiter is the very last slot on your master (stereo) bus, after your mastering EQ, compression and any saturation. It is the final gatekeeper, so nothing should process the audio after it — otherwise something downstream could push the level back over your ceiling and undo the protection.

Limiters are not only a mastering tool, though. You can drop one on an individual track — a bass, a drum bus, a synth — to tame a few stray peaks so the rest of the part can sit louder and steadier in the mix. On individual tracks you are usually using it for peak control, not loudness maximising, so you will only ask it to work lightly. Get your gain staging right before the limiter so it is catching genuine peaks, not compensating for a level that is out of control upstream.

How to use a limiter step by step

Here is a reliable starting workflow. Insert the limiter last on the bus you want to control, then work through the controls in order.

1. Set the output ceiling first. This is the hard cap. For a master heading to streaming, -1 dB is a safe, common choice; it leaves a little headroom so lossy encoders (which can add tiny peaks) don’t cause clipping on playback. Some engineers go to -1.5 or -2 dB for extra safety on heavily processed material.

2. Bring up the input gain (or “threshold”) slowly. This is the control that actually drives the loudness. As you raise input gain — or lower the threshold, depending on the plugin — more of the signal hits the ceiling and the limiter starts reducing gain. Watch the gain-reduction meter: it shows how many decibels the limiter is shaving off the peaks. Push until you like the loudness, then back off.

3. Aim for sensible gain reduction. On a master, 1–3 dB of reduction on the loudest moments usually sounds transparent. Regularly hitting 4–6 dB or more means you are asking the limiter to do too much, and it will start to sound pumped and flat. If you need that much, your mix probably needs more work first, not a harder limiter.

4. Set release to taste. Release controls how quickly the limiter lets go after a peak. Too fast can add distortion on bass-heavy material; too slow can dull transients and cause audible pumping. Many limiters have an “auto” or adaptive release that works well — start there, then adjust by ear if the low end sounds gritty or the level breathes unnaturally.

5. Check your loudness target. Use the plugin’s loudness metering (or a separate meter) to land near the level you are aiming for. Streaming platforms normalise to roughly -14 LUFS integrated, so chasing an extremely loud master just gets turned down anyway. Limiter controls explained

Beyond input, ceiling and release, you may see a few extra parameters worth knowing:

Look-ahead lets the limiter analyse the signal slightly before it acts, catching sharp transients cleanly. More look-ahead is smoother but adds latency, which matters if you are tracking through it.

True peak (TP) mode measures the inter-sample peaks that appear when digital audio is converted back to analogue. A true-peak limiter set to -1 dBTP guarantees you stay under the ceiling even after conversion — the safest choice for streaming delivery.

Attack on many limiters is fixed or extremely fast, but where it is adjustable, a slightly slower attack can let a touch of transient through for punch at the cost of some loudness.

Character or style modes switch between transparent and more aggressive algorithms. Transparent for delicate acoustic material; aggressive when you want obvious loudness and don’t mind some colour.

Common mistakes to avoid

The biggest one is over-limiting — driving so much gain reduction that transients disappear and the mix sounds squashed, fatiguing and small. Loud is not the same as good; a master with breathing room almost always sounds better than one crushed to a sausage waveform.

Second, don’t use a limiter to fix a bad mix. If the balance is wrong or a single element is jumping out, sort that in the mix — with volume automation, a compressor, or a multiband compressor — before the limiter. The limiter is a finishing tool, not a rescue tool.

Third, always leave headroom on the ceiling. Printing a master right up to 0 dB invites clipping once it is encoded for streaming. Fourth, don’t forget to bypass and compare at matched loudness: the limiter makes things louder, and louder usually sounds “better” for a moment, so A/B honestly to judge whether it is actually improving the sound.
