When an incoming peak tries to exceed the threshold, the limiter clamps down instantly and reduces the gain by exactly enough to keep the output under the ceiling. As a safety device, it catches unpredictable transients — a snare hit, a plosive on a vocal, a bass note that jumps out — so they never overshoot into digital clipping. A limiter is really just a compressor taken to an extreme, so the confusion is understandable. Both reduce dynamic range by turning down signal above a threshold. The difference is in degree and intent.

A compressor uses a moderate ratio — say 2:1 or 4:1 — to gently even out a performance, adding punch, glue, or sustain. It’s shaping tone and feel. A limiter uses a ratio so high (10:1, 20:1, or effectively infinity:1) that virtually no signal gets past the threshold. Its job isn’t tone; it’s control. The key controls on a limiter plugin

Most limiters keep the interface simple, because the whole point is one clear job. Here are the controls you’ll meet on almost any of them.

Threshold (or Input Gain). This sets where limiting begins. On many maximisers you push the input gain up to drive more signal into the ceiling — the more you push, the more limiting happens and the louder the result. Lowering the threshold does the same thing from the other direction.

Ceiling (Output Level). The absolute maximum the plugin will output. On a master, engineers often set this a touch below full scale — around -1.0 dBTP — to leave headroom for lossy encoding like MP3 or streaming codecs, which can push peaks slightly higher on playback.

Release. How quickly the limiter lets go after clamping a peak. Fast release recovers loudness quickly but can cause distortion or pumping on dense material; slow release is smoother but can dull transients. Attack / Lookahead. True peak and “brickwall” limiters use lookahead — they peek a few milliseconds into the future so they can start turning down just before a transient arrives, catching it cleanly instead of distorting.

How to use a limiter on your mix and master

The most common place for a limiter is the very last slot on your master bus, after your mix is balanced and any bus EQ or compression is in place. Put it last so it catches everything that comes before it.

Start with your ceiling set to about -1.0 dBTP. Then bring up the input gain (or lower the threshold) slowly and watch the gain-reduction meter. A few dB of reduction on the loudest moments is plenty for a natural, dynamic master. Push harder — 6 dB or more of constant reduction — and you’ll get louder, but you’ll also start losing punch and inviting distortion. When you slam a master with 8, 10, or 12 dB of gain reduction, the transients flatten, the low end loses definition, and the whole thing starts to sound fatiguing and distorted. Loud is not the same as good — a well-balanced mix that’s limited gently will almost always beat a weak mix crushed into loudness.

A second mistake is trying to fix a mix with the limiter. A limiter can’t add balance it wasn’t given.
