How to Balance Levels in a Mix

Why level balance is the foundation of every mix

Most beginner mixes don’t sound bad because of the wrong EQ move or the wrong reverb — they sound bad because the loudness relationships between parts are off. The vocal is buried, the kick disappears, the hi-hats stab at your ears. If you can learn to balance levels in a mix well, you’ll fix the majority of problems before touching another plugin. Faders are the most powerful tool in your session, and they’re free.

Think of a mix as a room where every instrument is a person talking. If everyone shouts at once, you hear noise. If one person leads and the others support at sensible volumes, you hear a conversation. Your job is to decide who leads, who supports, and how far back everything else sits.

Set a static rough balance before anything else

Start with a “static” balance — meaning no automation, no moving faders yet, just one fixed level per track that sounds good across the whole song. Pull all your faders to the bottom. Then bring up the anchor of the song first. For most vocal-led music that’s the lead vocal; for a lot of electronic and hip-hop it’s the kick and snare. Get that one element to a comfortable level that leaves headroom — aim to have your master bus peaking somewhere around -6 dB, not slamming 0.

Now add the next most important part and set it relative to the anchor. Keep going, one track at a time, always asking: can I hear this clearly, and is it in the right place front-to-back? Work at a moderate, consistent monitoring volume. Loud playback flatters everything and lies to you; a quieter level makes balance problems obvious because only the truly loud elements survive. If the vocal still cuts through when you turn your monitors way down, your balance is close.

How to balance levels in a mix by ear, track by track

Once your anchor is set, build outward in order of importance. A reliable order for a typical song is: lead vocal (or kick/snare), bass, the main rhythmic and harmonic instruments, then backing vocals, pads, and ear-candy. Here’s what to listen for at each stage.

Vocal and bass relationship. These two often compete for the emotional centre of the mix, and getting them to sit together is half the battle. The vocal should feel present and intelligible; the bass should feel solid and even across notes without booming on one note and vanishing on the next. If the bass is uneven, that’s often a performance or gain-staging issue you’ll clean up later, but set a sensible average level now.

Drums as a unit. Balance the kit against itself first — kick and snare as the backbone, then overheads, hats, and toms around them — then set the whole kit against the vocal and bass. The kick’s weight lives roughly in the 50–100 Hz region, so it shares space with the bass; if they’re both loud, the low end turns to mud no matter how good your levels are elsewhere.

Supporting parts. Everything else — rhythm guitars, keys, synth pads, backing vocals — is support. It should be audible when you listen for it but never pull your attention away from the lead. A common beginner mistake is mixing every part as if it’s the star. Most tracks should sit noticeably lower than you think.

Use gain staging so your levels behave

Balance is easier when every track enters the mix at a sane level. Before you fine-tune faders, check your gain staging: aim for individual tracks to peak somewhere in the -18 to -12 dBFS range on average, which keeps plugins operating in a comfortable range and leaves headroom on the master. If a track is clipping its channel or sitting far too hot, fix it at the input (clip gain or a trim/gain plugin at the top of the chain) rather than yanking the fader down to -30, which robs you of fine control right where you need it.

Good gain staging also means your fader ends up living near unity (0 dB) where small moves are precise, instead of way down at the bottom where a tiny nudge causes a big jump. Faders first — reach for EQ and compression only when needed

It’s tempting to solve every balance problem with processing, but a fader move is almost always the first thing to try. If a part is too loud, turn it down. If it’s masked by something else, the fix might be a level change, a small EQ cut on the masking track, or a pan move — in that order of simplicity. Compression can help a part sit more consistently by narrowing its dynamic range, which makes its perceived level steadier, but it’s a balance tool, not a replacement for setting the fader correctly in the first place.

When two parts genuinely occupy the same frequency space and no fader move separates them, that’s when EQ earns its place — a gentle cut in one to make room for the other. And for controlling a part whose level jumps all over the place, a compressor around 2:1 to 4:1 with moderate attack and release is a sensible starting point, adjusted by ear. Use panning and depth to open up space

Level isn’t only about front-to-back loudness — it works alongside stereo position and depth. If two parts clash even at good levels, panning them apart (say, doubled rhythm guitars hard left and right) can let both breathe without either getting louder. Keep low-frequency anchors like kick, bass, and lead vocal near the centre, and spread the supporting parts out.

Depth comes from a combination of level, reverb, and high-frequency content: quieter, darker, more reverberant parts sit further back; louder, brighter, drier parts come forward. So when you “turn something down,” you’re also pushing it back in the imaginary room. Use that deliberately — a backing vocal that’s slightly quieter and slightly more reverberant sits behind the lead exactly where it belongs. Check your balance and avoid common mistakes

Reference constantly. Pull up a professionally mixed track in a similar style and A/B it against yours, matching loudness roughly so the comparison is fair. You’ll hear immediately if your vocal is too quiet or your low end is too heavy. Listen on more than one system too — headphones, monitors, a phone speaker, the car. Balance that holds up everywhere is balance you can trust.

A few traps to avoid: mixing too loud (it hides balance faults and tires your ears); soloing tracks for too long (balance only makes sense in context, so spend most of your time listening to the full mix); and chasing loudness at the mix stage — leave headroom, keep the master peaking around -6 dB, and save the final loudness for mastering.
