How to EQ Vocals in FL Studio

Route your vocal to a Mixer track first

EQ lives in the Mixer, not the Channel Rack, so the first job is getting your vocal onto its own Mixer track. Open the Mixer with F9. In the Channel Rack, click your vocal channel to open it, then set its target Mixer track — the small numbered box at the top-left of the channel window (labelled TRACK). Pick an empty Mixer track, say track 1, and type or scroll to that number.

If you recorded the vocal as an audio clip in the Playlist, it may already be pointed at a Mixer track; just check which one is lighting up on the meters when the vocal plays. Giving the vocal a dedicated track matters — it keeps your EQ off the master and off other instruments, so you are shaping the voice and nothing else. Rename the track (double-click its name) to “Vox” so you do not lose it later.

Add Fruity Parametric EQ 2 to the insert chain

With your vocal’s Mixer track selected, look at the effects slots running down the right-hand side of the Mixer. Click the small arrow (or left-click an empty slot) on slot 1, then choose Select > Fruity Parametric EQ 2. This is FL Studio’s stock 7-band EQ, and it is genuinely good — a spectrum analyser sits behind the curve so you can see the voice while you shape it.

A quick note on order: put your corrective EQ before compression if your main goal is fixing tone, and after compression if you are polishing an already-controlled vocal. For a first pass, EQ-then-compress on the same track is a safe default. High-pass to clear the low-end rumble

Almost every vocal carries low-frequency junk it does not need — footsteps, desk thumps, mic-stand rumble, plosive energy. Clear it out first. In Fruity Parametric EQ 2, take the leftmost band, right-click its node (or use the band-type selector along the bottom of the plugin) and set it to the high-pass filter type — the shape that cuts everything below the node. Drag that node up to roughly 80–100 Hz for most voices.

Male voices sit lower, so 70–90 Hz is usually safe; brighter female or child voices can often take 100–120 Hz without thinning out. The rule: raise the filter until you hear the voice start to lose body, then back off a touch. You are removing rumble, not weight. Scroll the mouse wheel over the node to steepen or soften the slope if the cut sounds abrupt.

How to EQ vocals in FL Studio: cutting the problem frequencies

Now the corrective work — this is where you EQ vocals in FL Studio the way a mix engineer does: find what is wrong before you add anything nice. The two most common vocal problems are mud and boxiness.

  1. Find mud around 200–400 Hz. Take a free band, boost it a few dB, narrow the Q by scrolling the mouse wheel over the node, and sweep it left and right across 200–400 Hz. When the voice sounds thick, congested or “blanket over the speaker”, you have found it. Then pull that same band down by 2–4 dB.
  2. Check boxiness and nasal honk around 400 Hz–1 kHz. Same technique — boost, narrow, sweep. Around 500 Hz you will hear a cardboard-box quality; 800 Hz to 1 kHz is where nasal tone lives. Cut only what offends, usually a modest 2–3 dB dip.
  3. Tame harsh sibilance around 5–8 kHz if the “s” and “t” sounds spit. A small cut helps, but harshness that only appears on sibilants is really a job for a de-esser rather than static EQ — cutting 6 kHz all the time will dull the whole vocal.

Keep cuts surgical and few. Two or three well-placed dips do more than a dozen tiny ones, and every cut you make lets the good part of the voice through more clearly.

Boost presence and air to bring the vocal forward

With the mud gone, the voice has room for tasteful lifts. These are broad, gentle boosts — wide Q, small gain.

  • Presence: 3–5 kHz. A wide 1–2 dB lift here pushes the vocal forward in the mix and improves intelligibility, so the words cut through the beat. Use a peaking band with a low Q so it feels natural, not shouty.
  • Air: 10–16 kHz. Switch a top band to a High shelf and lift it 1–3 dB for that open, expensive, breathy sheen. Fruity Parametric EQ 2 handles high shelves cleanly, so this is one of the easiest wins on the whole vocal.

Boost with restraint. If you find yourself adding 6 dB or more, the problem is usually a cut you have not made yet, or a recording issue upstream. Common problems and quick fixes

A few things trip people up when they first EQ vocals in FL Studio:

  • The EQ does nothing. Your vocal is almost certainly not routed to the track the EQ is on. Check the TRACK number on the channel matches the Mixer track holding Fruity Parametric EQ 2, and confirm the meters move.
  • It sounds thin after high-passing. You cut too high. Drag the high-pass point back down toward 70–80 Hz until the body returns.
  • The vocal sounds worse, not better. Use the power light at the top-left of the plugin to bypass and compare against the raw signal often. If bypassed sounds better, you are over-processing — undo and make fewer, smaller moves.
  • Everything is too loud after boosting. Boosting raises overall level. Pull the Mixer track fader down a decibel or two so you are comparing tone, not volume — louder always seems “better” and will fool you.
  • Harshness comes and goes. That is sibilance, not tone. Add a de-esser after the EQ instead of gutting your presence range.

Trust your ears over the analyser. The spectrum display is a guide for finding frequencies, not a target to flatten. Two vocals never need the same curve.

When stock is not enough
