Set your tempo, grid and time signature first
Tempo sets the entire mood, so choose it before you place a single note. Most modern hip-hop and trap sits somewhere in the 130–150 BPM range but is felt at half that speed; lo-fi drifts around 70–90; house and pop hover near 120–128. If you’re unsure, start at 140 and adjust — you can always change it later, and hearing the beat at a few tempos tells you a lot.
Next, set your grid resolution. A bar of 4/4 divides into four beats, and each beat divides into four sixteenth-notes, giving you sixteen steps per bar. Sixteenth-note resolution is the workhorse for programming drums — fine enough for fast hats, coarse enough to stay readable. When you want faster hi-hat rolls, temporarily switch to 1/32 or 1/64 for that section only, then switch back. Keep snap-to-grid on while you learn; you can loosen it later for feel.
How to program drums: the kick and snare backbone
Every groove starts with the relationship between the kick and the snare, so lay those down first and get them locked before you add anything else. The snare (or clap) almost always lands on beats 2 and 4 — that’s the backbeat, the part listeners nod their heads to. Put a snare on step 5 and step 13 of your sixteen-step bar and you already have the skeleton of nearly every popular beat.
The kick is where your signature lives. The simplest pattern is a kick on beats 1 and 3 (steps 1 and 9), giving a steady “boom-bap” foundation. From there, start moving kicks off the beat: add a kick just before the snare, or drop one on an off-step to create a syncopated bounce. In trap especially, the kick often doubles as the 808, so its rhythm and the bassline are the same performance — we’ll come back to that. Resist the urge to fill every space. A pattern with room in it hits harder than one crammed with hits.
Play the two-bar loop repeatedly and audition small changes. Move one kick a step earlier. Delete a hit. The backbone should feel good on its own, with no hats and no melody, before you move on.
Layer in hi-hats, open hats and percussion
Hi-hats provide the momentum and the top-end sparkle. Start with a closed hat on every eighth-note (steps 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15) for a steady pulse, or every sixteenth for a busier, trap-style feel. Straight hats can sound robotic, though, so this is where programming skill shows.
Three moves bring hats to life. First, rolls: on one or two steps, cram in two, three or four rapid hits (drop to 1/32 or triplet resolution for these). Second, open hats: place an open hi-hat on an off-beat — often the “and” before beat 1 — so it rings into the next bar and creates a sense of push-and-pull. Third, velocity variation, which we cover in its own step below, because it’s what stops a hat pattern from sounding like a machine gun.
Once the hats groove, sprinkle in supporting percussion: a rimshot, a shaker, a single well-placed crash, or a vocal chop. Add these one at a time and mute anything that clutters the pocket. Percussion is seasoning, not the meal.
Add swing so the beat feels human, not robotic
A perfectly quantised pattern lands every note dead on the grid, which is exactly why it can feel stiff. Swing (sometimes called shuffle or groove) nudges the off-beat notes slightly late, creating the loose, rolling feel you hear in funk, hip-hop and house. Most DAWs have a global swing knob or a groove template — dial in 10–20% and listen. Too much and it sounds drunk; a little goes a long way.
Swing usually matters most on the hi-hats and the snare’s ghost notes. You can also nudge individual hits manually: pull a snare a few milliseconds behind the beat to “lay it back” and relax the groove, or push a hat slightly ahead to add urgency. This is the single biggest thing separating a beat that sounds programmed from one that sounds played. Trust your ears over the numbers.
Program a melodic 808 or bassline that locks to the kick
The 808 is a long, tuned kick-bass sound, and in modern beats it carries both the low end and the bassline. The golden rule: your 808 and your kick drum must not fight for the same low frequencies at the same instant. Either sidechain the 808 to duck when the kick hits, or — more commonly — treat the kick as the transient click and let the 808 be the sustained note underneath it, triggered on the same steps.
To make an 808 melodic, draw it in the piano roll and change the pitch of individual notes to follow your melody or chord root. Use glide/portamento so notes slide into each other for that signature trap slur. Keep note lengths deliberate: a short 808 punches, a long one drones and fills space. Tune the 808 to the key of your track — an out-of-key 808 is the most common reason a beat sounds “off” even when the drums are tight. Humanise with velocity and dynamics
Velocity is how hard each hit plays — it controls loudness and, on good samples, tone. Flat velocities are the fastest giveaway of a beginner beat. Go through your hats and vary them: accent the down-beats, pull back the in-between hits, and drop a few very quiet “ghost” hits for texture. A common, natural-sounding hat pattern alternates loud-soft-medium-soft across the bar.
Do the same for snares and kicks, if more subtly. Add quiet ghost snares between the main backbeats to fill the groove without stealing focus. Vary the kick velocity a touch so repeated hits don’t sound photocopied. Many producers also add a hair of randomisation to timing and velocity — most DAWs have a “humanise” function that does this in one click. Use it lightly; the goal is a real drummer’s slight imperfection, not chaos.
Choose sounds that fit — one-shots vs loops
Great programming on weak sounds still sounds weak. You have two paths. One-shots are single hits (one kick, one snare, one hat) that you sequence yourself — maximum control, and the approach everything above assumes. Loops are pre-made drum patterns you drop in and chop or layer; they’re fast and great for inspiration, though you have less control over the internal groove.

A two-bar loop is a groove, not a song. Arrangement is what turns it into something people listen to all the way through. Think in sections: an intro that establishes the mood, a main groove (your full pattern), a variation or “B” section, and breakdowns where you strip elements away. Contrast is everything — the drop only hits hard because the eight bars before it were quieter.
Use simple techniques to keep interest: mute the hats for four bars then bring them back; drop the 808 out under the vocal and slam it back in on the hook; add a drum fill or a reverse-cymbal swell into each new section. A classic structure for a beat is intro, verse, hook, verse, hook, bridge, hook — but let the energy, not a rulebook, decide.
